There is also the relatively widespread tool htpasswd that allows generating salted password hashes: https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/programs/htpasswd.html - if for whatever reason (compliance?) we decide to not allow plain text passwords, it could be a good compromise to support some form of hash that can be generated with this tool.
