Noticed this issue after upgrading from XWiki 4.5 to 15.10 - suddenly, all numbered lists where we used incremented numbers (without knowing it was actually forbidden by the syntax) got broken - because the whole list is rendered as one big <li> now, with <br> between individual list items. Not sure how the old wiki handled this, but we certainly didn't get this ugly formatting back then...
Another point is that by implementing this, the XWiki syntax for lists would get at least a bit closer to the widespread Markdown syntax.
