Thanks a lot for the detailed explanations!

I've tried to reproduce on XWiki 16.5 and couldn't, it all worked fine. I'm attaching a XAR before the move in case someone wants to try it.

The only thing that comes to mind is that the backlinks table was not correct in your case for some reason.
