I've modified the script at https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ to add a special behavior for distributions ids, to redirect to the xwiki.org home page as I believe this is what users will expect.
Note: This allows to create the distribution pages on e.x.o if we want while still be able to redirect when users click in the footer.
