Hi, I found the GroupService as in: context.getWiki().getGroupService(context).addUserToGroup(user, database, group, context); This GroupService interface allows me to locate users in a group and even add a user to a group. I don't see a method to remove a user from an XWiki group. How to do that in plug-in code? Broken login-link?

I just installed xwiki 1.0-beta-6.2657 on Ubuntu 6.10 using the standalone installer (no changes to any configurations or such) and everything works fine, EXCEPT: The "Login"-link in the top right corner does not work, I get: HTTP ERROR: 404 /bin/login/XWiki/XWikiLogin Not Found RequestURI=/bin/login/XWiki/XWikiLogin If I add "/xwiki" to the start of the URL it sort of works, I can access the login page, but can only log in with the Admin account. (Yes, I have created a normal user account as well.) It seems to me that the first "/xwiki" part of the URL is missing, it's there in all other links but not this one. BTW, same thing occurs with the "logout"-link, and if I add "/xwiki" it works. Any help is greatly appreciated! [Idea] Jboss cache instead of oscache and jboss integration

Hi all, First sorry for posting this in the site without previous discussion in the list, in future ideas section. In our department, we use jboss server as primary application server product, a jboss server ships jboss cache as cache solution, and hiberbate of course. We have extended xwkicache and we have now a jboss cache implementation, due a high workload we have not tested it. Are any issues doing this to pay atention? What about usign jboss hibernate session factory? Regards.

Automatic creation of XWIKI schema?

I can't get XWiki to start because my database has no tables in it. It complains that the XWIKI schema doesn't exist. I understand some people fall back to using a *.sql script to create their schema and tables, but that XWiki -- through Hibernate -- should be able to automatically create the tables it needs. I've looked in my xwiki.cfg and found that the following is set to non-zero: xwiki.store.hibernate.updateschema=1 Is that all there should be to it? I know Hibernate also supports properties to automatically create the schema, but I can't figure out how I would set that for Hibernate within XWiki: hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=create-drop I'm running under Tomcat 5.5 on Windows XP with Apache Derby in Embedded mode. I can connect to my DB using SQuirreL SQL and confirm that even the XWIKI schema isn't being created. I can manually create it ('create schema XWIKI;') and then the XWiki errors turn into tables not existing rather than schema not existing. I've tried to turn on debugging for com.xpn.xwiki.store in my manually created xwiki/WEb-INF/classes/logging.properties (as per the TomCat documentation), but I can't see any output getting logged (logging in TomCat was already a challenge for me, so that's just making this XWiki problem harder to solve). Slow performance on certain pages after upgrade to beta5

Hi all, We tried to upgrade our production server to beta5 over the weekend, but we noticed much slower response time on the main page. Previous to upgrade, the mainpage came up in less than a second, but with Beta 5 (and now Beta 6), it takes 8-12 seconds (we reverted to xwiki .9). After moving the database to testing and doing some debugging, I think I see part of the problem. The main page shows several news items (ArticleClass items), and it appears that they are the cause of the slowdown. If I comment out all the calls to get information about these items ( ie $newsdoc.display("title", "view", $newsobject) ) the page speeds up significantly (about 1 second per field not retrieved). If I further comment out calls to $xwiki.getLocalUserName, I get another speed up of about 2 seconds (there were two calls per news item: for author and creator). The strange thing is, we saw little or no performance difference between xwiki .9 and 1 with our test databases, but copy the production database to testing and we see it. If we use xwiki .9, it's fast again. We had previously added an extensive set of indexes to the mysql database to improve performance in .9, but dropping/changing/recreating them had no significant effect. I've tried many debugging steps such as turning on hibernate debug and xwiki debug, and can't see any unexpected exceptions on database upgrade., and there's nothing unexpected in xwiki.log. The database is large-ish, 656M, but 601M of that is attachments, and deleting the entire contents of xwikiattachments and xwikiattachment_content has no effect. We have 1300 users listed on the users page, but I have not tried deleting some yet. Disabling stats had no impact on performance. I'm testing on Gentoo Linux, with IBM JDK 1.5, Tomcat 5.5, and MySQL 5. [Proposal] A system to manually manage the state of the wiki page (version, redactor, comment, validation, ...)

Hello the xwiki community, We use Xwiki for a couple of years now as a tool for managing our IT projects. During the redaction of the main project documents, we have a strong need of versionning management - not the xwiki system, but our own one. To be clear, when a wiki page is written some information can be included in it : * Document version * Name of the redactor * Date of the modification * Name of validator * Comment In fact, the xwiki system contains almost all the components, but those information are updated each time a modification is being done, even when the document is a draft and has not be validated. For example, the xwiki version number is automatically incremented whereas the real document version number is still the same. So it can very very useful to integrate a system which can be able to manage manually the different state of the document. Regards Christophe Koehl From - Mon

Vincent, Sergiu, and the whole community: My conversation begun by Gunther Leeb has continued offline and I've agreed to help him implement a solution similar to one I've created, which will probably be generally useful. Ironically enough, we seem to have validated the old adage of the cobbler's children going barefoot - we're working on a feature of a Wiki, and though we have a community of interested users and developers and access to a Wiki, we began by still using a one-to-one email exchange. In repentance thereof, I wish to nail down a page or three on xwiki.org to simultaneously develop, publish, and offer for comment the work we are doing. Where would be the best place to put this? The topic is enhancing the LDAP authentication service implementation in the ways that Gunter needs, which would add a feature to discriminate on values in the LDAP-supplied user information. brain[sic]

Case insensitive search

Hi, I noticed that XWiki does case sensitive search, e.g. if I search for "available", available will be found, but not "Available." How can I make searches case insensitive? Speaking of searching, it not clear to me what happens if I turn on Lucene. Does this replace searching back-end for regular search box, or I have to add new page for searching? Regards, v Zeljko

Internet explorer and WYSIWYG

Hi All, I've been getting some strange results with WYSiWYG since Beta1, but have never been able to reliably test it. Effectively, here's the problems as reported from users (bear in mind these were appearing as random until this morning). Before logging the issue, I thought I'd check if anyone else has had it (and maybe could be some config problem): * User creates a news item (standard xwiki news page) using wysiwyg. Adding some color to certain words to highlight actions, etc. * Save item. * User (same or other) views the item, all is fine. * User edits the item, and two issues arise immediately * First, all text is changed to match a random (usually first) color chosen for any word in the text. * Second, a large chunk of the data is missing. This only happens with Internet Explorer 6. Firefox 2.0 and 1.5 do not exhibit the problem. Stylesheet viewed on login with restricted access

Hi everyone, I'm tryin' to deploy a private xwiki, so XwikiGuests can't see/edit any wiki's pages. So I have to give specific pages access rights to login/register ... pages Unfortunately, I cant' manage to view these pages as a xwikiguest with the associated stylesheet :) I've seen this previous post : http://mail-archive.objectweb.org/xwiki-users/2005-07/msg00045.html But it's pretty old ... What I tried to do is to give a view access to xwikiguest on http://myserver/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/DefaultSkin, which is the skin I use by default. But it doesn't seem to fit. LDAP -or- internal user management

Hi, Using XWiki 1.0B3. After switching to using LDAP (using our eDirectory), the current user access management behavior that I am seeing is, that 1. I can login with a user/pwd authenticated against LDAP/eDirectory. If the user does not already exist in XWiki, the user appears to be created. 2. A user, created in XWiki CANNOT Login anymore, if he/she is not an LDAP user. (Why is that?) 3. The old passwords do not work anymore for users with a matching entry in XWiki and LDAP. (ok) Why can't I add user per hand if I use LDAP? This would at least allow some Workaround for some other limitations and give the administrator a way to allow users that for some reasons do not get an entry in the LDAP. Can I hope for XWiki 1.0 to include the handling of an LDAP group for authentication? I have read a blog mentioning LDAP group support being planned for 1.0. Is this still the case? Message resources

Greetings, There is a number of ApplicationResources_xx.properties in XWiki and it looks like all of them are different (contain different set of keys). Both ApplicationResources.properties and ApplicationResources_en.properties are in english and are mostly identical except for ~70 missing keys in _en file. Given that, I have two questions: 1. What is the "most supported" message resources file? 2. Are all messages from .properties used in XWiki, or some are redundant? If the latter, are there plans for removal of unnecessary keys for 1.0release? -- Best regards, Pavel

Creating my own skin

Hi everybody, I've started using xWiki a few weeks ago and now I want to make it look the way I want. So I'm trying to create my own skin. I read the Admin guide<http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Skins>about it, plus other mails but I have to say it's not an easy task. I don't really know where to start because I don't understand all the css files. xwiki10b1 has 23 css files but I think only 11 are used. Am I right ( style.css; elements.css; classes.css; xwiki.css; wiki.css; page.css; rss.css; screenlayout.css; microformats.css; presentation.css; colorsblack.css;) ? If yes, what are the other ones used for (chw.css, colorsblue.css, customcoloes.css, style1.css...) ? Why is page.css empty, is it the one to fill ? In other words, which css should I change if I want another layout, another font, colours.... Thanks for you help, Antonio

export/import Errors & Questions

I'm using 1.0-beta-5.2310, using the stand-alone install. The question: Is there a way to export (then import into another installation of XWiki), a particular space? The errors: I'm also having difficulty doing a "normal" import (which I assume includes the entire wiki), from one installation into another. Hi Sergiu I would like to keep stuff in the Wiki. But when management becomes involved, politics start to cloud the optics. I work in a development shop that is trying to be Agile and still hold onto the good things in RUP particularly the Rational Tool set. In practice these are not that compatible, and unfortunately, Wiki is not winning at the moment in the mix. I did actually try the XSL-FO route in converting some Wiki documents to RTF. I was not totally happy with the results. Not sure where things broke down, but on a simple page that had mixed numbering\bulleting, i.e. <ol><li><ul>, the produced results were not very close the original wiki content. Just straight PDF output of the same pages is not exactly like the original displayed in Wiki. Granted, we are using a 0.9 version of xWiki, so maybe things are better now in 1.0. Hi, First of all, why Word? It's a proprietary format changing from version to version. It's like saving all your important data on floppy disks for safe storage. You should at least use an open format, like OASIS Open Document. You can do a clever thing which requires no tools. - Export your wiki documents to XML. You can either make a groovy script for this, which can be run from a command line, or use the export feature in the new xwiki. - You can the process the documents as any XML file. Either make a program that uses DOM or SAX to process it, or write an XSLT stylesheet to transform it into any other XML-based document format (Open Document, DocBook or the new MS Word), or even XSL-FO to generate PDF and RTF files. - What's more, you can make an automated task for this, to be triggered once every week. Hi Vincent This is something I would greatly appreciate being worked on. I recently tried to work on a simple app - but got stuck on the use of Classes and Objects. I was trying to model use cases. For this, it seemed like I should have a parent object, UseCase, and then two child objects UseCaseStep and UseCaseStepExtension. The children would have 1:n relations from the parent. With the limited documentation about building XWiki apps, I couldn't easily see how this could be managed. renameDocument backlinks

Hi, I may have run into a renameDocument problem with backlinks. I have a link to Main.a on Main.WebHome, and I rename document Main.a to Main.b, the link on Main.WebHome is properly updated to point to Main.b. But, if I then further rename Main.b to Main.c, the link on Main.WebHome is not re-updated to point to Main.c. However, if I edit and save Main.WebHome between the two renames, it does update the backlink the second time. I think it's because XWikiDocument.renameDocument does not save() the backlinkDocument (or I'm doing something completely wrong). Other than that Document.renameDocument seems to work great! LDAP

Hi, In our Novell eDirectory LDAP structure we have about 2000 employees. We cannot allow ALL users in the LDAP structure to have access to XWiki. We would like to specify an LDAP group for all the users that have access to XWiki. How could we configure this? Our eDirectory allows annonymous browsing but I have not found a way to specify an LDAP group for controlling access to XWiki. With this I am not requesting the much harder problem of synchronizing LDAP groups with XWiki groups for page access rights. I am looking for a way to just control the list of users that have access to XWiki from an identity system behind LDAP. LDAP for multiple departments

Hi, In our LDAP structure (about 2000 employees) the users that should have access to XWiki are in multiple department nodes in the LDAP structure. Thus, I cannot specify a single pattern of the kind cn={0},department=USER,department=INFORMATIK,department=1230,o=MP for authentication. How could I specify users from different departments to have access to XWiki? Can I specify multiple xwiki.authentication.ldap.bind_DN lines that are searched for the user? Hi Ronald, Srinivasa and I are trying to get some help with the NULL value when starting up xwiki in Oracle 9i as well as dealing with CLob datatypes in Oracle. Do you have any suggestions on how to get this working? I read in the thread below last years there were suggestion to add more logic to the getters in some beans. Did anyone ever got that to work? We really like xWiki and are trying hard to make work with Oracle but we also have some deadlines and I hate to have to look for a replacement to xWiki. Any help will be greatly appreciate it. Appearantly, during initialisation of a new XWiki database, one or more XWikiDOC records are created that contain an empty XWD_TITLE field. It seems that Oracle interprets an empty string differently than (for instance) mySQL.When a query contains a string value that is empty (""), Oracle stores this in the database as a NULL value. Because the XWD_TITLE field has a NOT NULL constraint, the exception is raised. Oracle 10g has some kind of a switch in the form of the statement IGNORE NAV that can be included in the (Oracle specific?) MODEL clause of an SQL query. I have not tried this though, because our installation of XWiki had to be completed and it looks like the MODEL clause is not transparently supported in Hibernate. Besides, I think there is another problem with the use of Oracle. Large text fields are implemented als a CLOB type. But searching this type of field with LIKE only accesses the first 4K of the field. There is a forum thread ( http://mail-archive.objectweb.org/xwiki-users/2006-08/msg00112.html) that mentions this and the possible use of Lucene. Problem with corrupted display while editing on some machines

Hi We have a problem with a wiki that we are working on. It's a trivial wiki and it's hosted by the nice xwiki people (so it should not be an installation / configuration issue). The problem is that when we edit a page on some machines (but only some of them, editing the same page on another machine is usually OK) we get a corrupted display. This is happening with IE7 and Firefox 2. What might be causing this? Where do we start looking? Please see the attached image. Tim

Layout issue with non-latin pages on b5

Greetings, I noticed that in certain cases such pages are rendered incorrectly, without white background. Comparing HTML of correct and incorrect page I noticed that broken one uses <div class="clearfloat"> while correct one mentions <div class="clearfloats">. Notice the "s" in the correct class name. Changing class name with firefox dom explorer fixes the layout. By removing some content I could find a point where adding another non-latin character makes things go wrong. Adding ASCII works fine though. Is it a known issue? If not, can it be addressed in scope of 1.0development? -- Best regards, Pavel

problem with Chinese

I write Chinese characters with Xwiki. I have change the encoding to UTF-8. Futhermore, I set mysql default encode to UTF-8. The Wiki can work well to display Chinese in the edit situation and view situation. After I change the wiki by writing Chinese in it. And change it again. If I roll back the version, the Chinese characters will become something like "?????". How to solve this problem? Thanks, Wang Ning

Adding Groovy add-ons..

Hi folks, Looking at applying some of the add-ons to Groovy to allow some extra functionality (most likely starting with Scriptom/JACob). I have some questions though: 1) As I understand it, there are some tightened security changes for XWikiBeta5 and above (not running in our test environment yet). How will this affect Xwiki going forward (eg, will this be restricted in some way from xwiki in future)? 2) Where is the standard Groovy library path for xwiki (doesn't seem to be any groovy folders under the xwiki application)?

Improving our default wiki

Hi everyone, XWiki is a platform for building wikis. Our default Wiki is a demo wiki showing what can be done with XWiki. We need to improve it so that it can stand the competition with the nicest wikis available out there (and beat them! :)). I've started a page to gather feedback from users and developers on what should be improved to make our default wiki better. Is there an easy way to hide a space (navigation, search, what's new)

Hi- I think I need something like a space preference that allows certain spaces to be "hidden" in places where their existence would show. My usual configuration is: public-topic-space public-topic-space limited-or-private-space I can already set roles that control who can _use_ the private space, but I often want it to be _completely invisible_ to public users. Panels layout problem

Hi, I tried to set the Panel on the left side, so in "Panel Wizard" I chose "Left column" as page layout and saved this. Now all my Panels are gone. Tried to "Revert " and I tried changing to "Right Column" but still the layout resets to "No Side column". Question about roles for skins, skins not working on registration,

Hi- I'm really struggling to get the xWiki to a point where I can expose it to the real Internet. I'm having a _lot_ of trouble getting security to work tolerably. ? What roles control skin access? I have: Global XWikiGuest register allow Global XWikiGuest comment deny Panels XWikiGuest view allow XWiki XWikiGuest view allow But, registration still doesn't work. The skins and stuff are denied, and the registration page pulls disastrous javascript errors, too. There isn't a "Skins" space, though, to give them access to- panels and xwiki didn't do it- what gives? Also, ? How to set up the email validation? I turned it on and put reasonable text in the email stuff, and the email is sent... but, I don't see a generated confirmation number- now the user gets a form wanting the confirmation number- what is configured wrong? Btw, are Menu and Toolbar pages the same items that belongs to the admin pages 'right panel' and 'left Panel' ? I assume yes. Well, it seems i can't make them hidden in all the wiki even if i choose 'No' in XWikiPreferences?xpage=editprefs (Thems). I've seen in the FAQ that i need to build a new skin to hide the panels. Caching of arbitrary objects

I have a page that is a mashup of two internal web services - one that serves organization structure, and another that serves IM presence indicators - to produce a team listing for each of the groups that own the content of one of our XWiki instances. Because queries to the first are costly and their content is updated infrequently, a caching mechanism is indicated. I see two ways of doing this: one is to manipulate the URL object for the outgoing request to provide for normal HTTP caching disciplines. I'd prefer to do it this way, but haven't a clue at the moment of how to do it, since it's inside org.dom4j.io.SAXReader, to whose read(String) method I pass a URL. Another way that I'd like to investigate in parallel is simply to use XWiki's caching mechanism to cache the parsed org.dom4j.Document objects that are returned. Establishing a new cache with a Velocity script seems straightforward (though of course it requires programming rights): #set($myCache = $xwiki.xWiki.cacheService.newCache()) $mycache.put("name", $myObject) $myCache.get("name") ... etc... but it suffers from two problems: first, it's only in the context of the request, making it useless; second, there's no way to manage the freshness exception thrown from the get methods. So apparently a plugin is indicated; ideally, one that: could be used for any purpose; provided simple means of specifying cache parameters, such as the freshness rules and the operation required to refresh the cache. I think that the best way to use it would look something like: #set($myCache = $xwiki.myCachePlugin) $myCache.setParameters(...) $myCache.cached('$velocityCode') ## should pass the Context, or is that part of the plugin API? The method would use the unrendered Velocity code as the key to the cache, look first in the cache and return it, rendering the code and caching its result first if the value was not fresh. In describing this, I'm thinking that the DefaultPlugin actually provides for a lot of this. Thoughts, anyone? brain[sic]

Easy to set object properties from strings?

The information is mostly in the form of strings, but the object's fields might not be. The question: Is there a simple, type-independent method to set an XWiki Object field's value from a string? The question is not "how can this be done", since I can easily work that out, but rather "is there a method currently available"? brain[sic]

Configuration pb: incorrect redirection when authenticating

Hi, I'm new to XWiki. I've configured it behind Apache (XWiki is running on the same host and listening on tcp/7070). Apache uses a simple RewriteRule to send all trafic to XWiki. That works fine, except when I change the Xwiki configuration to request authentication of all visitors. In this case, the (unauthenticated) visitor is redirected to: http://localhost:7070/xwiki/bin/login/XWiki/XWikiLogin;jsessionid=22... instead of http://mywiki.fr/xwiki/bin/login/XWiki/XWikiLogin... The same thing occurs when my administrator session expires, but the all other links (including "Log-In) work. Seems to me like a bug or misconfiguration. Any idea ? Thanks for your help Emmanuel

But I am curious if anyone of you has also experienced the same problem: i.e. if you mix numbered bullet points and regular bullet points, you will lose the numbering and the layout changes quite a bit. But I still don't know how to change to Chinese. Do xwiki has something like language-pack which can put somewhere. Then user can change language conveniently. Do we need a forum?

Hi, We're currently using mailing lists and IRC (and person2person chats) for answering user questions. But: - IRC has no history (yet; when's that bot coming online?) - mailing lists are not that easy to browse and search. Should we make a forum for users? Pro - One place where users can find information, organized by topics - Users are used to posting on forums, and we might get a larger community Con - Soon it will get too crowded, and (some) developers won't have the time to answer all the emails; we need a strong community, and advanced users knowing the code, and for this we need documentation As a developer, I'd stick to mailing lists. WYSIWYG editor problem

Hi, Folks, We have problems to use bullet points in the WYSIWYG editor (in both beta 4 and beta 5 version). If we mix order bullets (1,2,3,...) with unordered bullets (*...), the WYSIWYG editor shows one layout, wiki editor shows another the View screen shows a 3rd different layout I experienced similar problem in previous versions of xwki (e.g. 0.984 etc). Both! Time ago I've had the same doubt with a group I have worked with. Sorry, I don't longer manage this group and it seems to me that their forums are dead. The solution that time was a free access license of JiveForum. I think this kind of license doesn't exist any more for JiveForum from JiveSoftware (http://www.jivesoftware.com/), but taking into account that this was some years ago, now you will find nice software with the same or even better features within ObjectWeb founding members!!! And I am sure that if you contact JiveSoftware you could reach some kind of agreement to use an updated release. I withdrew of using this software because the free edition doesn't allow me to manage the forum users database by connecting the software to my LDAP server. By using this software, it was a bit tricky to follow a thread if the title of a message is modified in a reply, but I think the behaviour is acceptable. I think I could create a example in one of my servers at http://xen.net:8090/forum/ or even move it to a more reliable server hosted in the Supercomputing Center of Galicia, Spain. Just my 2 cents! Roles allow edit where they shouldn't...

When I set it up so that until I add users to a group manually, they are only allowed to view and register, XWiki is still allowing them to edit _their own profile_, no matter what. This defeats the #1 reason I'm blocking them from editing- the misuse of my Wiki for Google Ranking Spam. What they do is, they register, they put a milling links for spam stuff in their profile comments and such, then the add links from external places to there, and so forth, to scam Google into thinking lots of different sites link to them, then Google sees MY domain linking to the spam sites, and maybe dings me, TOO! If I set it up for no editing until I add a user to the "editors" group, I mean NO editing- PERIOD- *especially* including their profile! Only 'register' rights doesn't work

yep, Sure i dont see the daily number of contributions, maybe u're right ;) The only fact wich is difficult for me to understand is that there is only one english version even if there is some users that ask for french documentation..maybe they would like to contribute, maybe not..but where can they contribute ? You say about professionnal way, professionnal team and quality. Trying one french instance experimentation is a good way : i think authors must be called "french XWiki community" instead of "Official XWiki team".. Poor number of contribution on this instance will only say that there is not enough french users in the french XWiki community who would like to contribute on XWiki french website, and not that the XWiki or XWiki team aren't anough qualified. When you are saying about your experiment, i understand that the french version will be outdated, and i agree. You say about Jakarta Cactus outdated documentation that create a lot of feedbacks. I think a french user that discover XWiki website and don't speak english will create same number(even more!?) of feedback : FAQ / comments or simply don't come on this website... About the work needed to administrate this french instance, i completely agree. This is a critical point... I understand that this could be a main reason to avoid creating french version (for now ! :)). So maybe the official team could create the french instance with a warning "this website isn't official and is updated by users temself, please go to the official website for an updated content" or something like this (sorry for my poor english ;p) any way, thanks for your feedback Vincent. First, I created a CNAME, domain2.domain1.com -> domain1.com Next, I created XWiki.XWikiServerXwiki, added XWiki.XWikiServerClass (note: in the dropdown, it shows view.XWiki.XWikiServerClass -- could that be the problem??), set the server to www.domain1.com and the owner to XWiki.admin. Then I created XWiki.XWikiServerDomain2, added XWiki.XWikiServerClass, set the server to domain2.domain1.com and the owner to XWiki.admin. Then I visit www.domain1.com, it's fine. When I visit domain2.domain1.com, it redirects me to the no such wiki page. javascript error: wikiEditor is undefined when saving

Hi Just installed the newest and greatest XWiki - 1.0-beta-5.2310 and finding that I get a javascript error when I try to save documents. Message: Error: 'wikiEditor' is undefined Happens only when I save from the Wiki editor. When saving from the Wysiwyg editor I do not get the error. Running on Window 2000, Tomcat 5.5, MySQL, IE 6.0 SP1. My content does save - just have to wait for IE to tell my that it has an issue. Such an obvious error - makes me thing I have a config issue. Any ideas what is wrong?

LGPL w/r/t plugins - are they derivative?

Hi, xwikiites. I was wondering how you regard plugins that extend the capabilities of xwiki with resepct to LGPL license. Do you consider plugins to be derivative works? (I am assuming that they are not already derivative in tthe sense of being constructed on top of an existing LGPLed code base) For instance (purely hypothetical): Commercial developer "D" develops a type-ahead plugin that fills in names of people in his office. The system is so successful, that he plans to market "TAXWiki" - based on the xwiki codebase, but with the added feature of corporate-aware type-ahead. Would the LGPL require that D contribute the source code to his type-ahead plugin back to the xwiki codebase? Thanks very much, -apperson

Impossible to register a new user

Can't get XWiki 1.0 beta 4 and embedded Apache Derby to play nice

I blew that away to start fresh with XWiki 1.0 beta 4 (still with embedded Derby under Tomcat 5 on Windows XP); however, I've run into a variety of difficulties. In my last run with XWiki, someone had converted the script to create the DB into a Derby-compatible syntax which I ran through SQuirreL SQL Client to prime the DB. With the latest version of XWiki, though, it seems there is no need to explicitly create the schema ahead of time. My understanding is that Hibernate will do this automatically when directed to do so through the XWiki configuration: xwiki.store.hibernate.updateschema=1 Thus, I have Tomcat 5 set up with a datasource for the XWiki context: <Context docBase="C:/Program Files/XWiki/xwiki-1.0" useNaming="true" swallowOutput="true" privileged="true" antiResourceLocking="false" antiJARLocking="false" reloadable="true" > <Resource name="jdbc/xwiki" description="XWiki DataSource" auth="Container" username="xwiki" password="xwiki" type="javax.sql.DataSource" driverClassName="org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver" url="jdbc:derby:C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/Xwiki;create=true" maxActive="8" maxIdle="4" />  <ResourceLink name="users" global="UserDatabase" type="org.apache.catalina.UserDatabase"/> </Context> In the hibernate.cfg.xml file, I've commented out the direct connections in favor of using a datasource:  <property name="connection.datasource">java:/comp/env/jdbc/xwiki</property> <property name="dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.DerbyDialect</property> Trying this, though, I get problems when I hit my XWiki saying the schema XWIKI is not found. I connected again using SQuirreL SQL Client and indeed, there was no XWIKI schema (but the default, APP, was there). So I created one using SQL: CREATE SCHEMA XWIKI Now the schema exists, so I start Tomcat with XWiki and try to access it. Now it doesn't complain about the schema not existing. Instead it says it can't find the tables it wants: ERROR 42X05: Table 'XWIKI.XWIKIDOC' does not exist. I cannot understand what it takes to have the schema created. Any ideas?

Sorry to keep sending follow-ups, but just to explain, I went to edit XWiki.XWikiServerDomain2 and set the "server" field to domain2.domain2.com Then, I added a CNAME record in DNS to point domain2.domain2.com to that box. Then navigated my browser to http://domain2.domain2.com:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ and it redirected me to the no such wiki page. Thanks.

Thanks Vincent, Yes, I tried following both http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Virtualization and http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/FAQ/HowToSetupVirtualWikis word-for-word. It seems to be close to working. If I have XWiki.XWikiServerDomain1 with server www.domain1.com and XWiki.XWikiServerDomain2 with server set to www.domain 2.com, and I hit http://www.domain1.com:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome and http://www.domain2.com:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome it at least realizes there should be sites at both (ie it find a wiki), it's just using the same database for each. Do I need to do something to tell it to configure separate databases? [And, if I change the server on domain2 from www.domain2.com to just domain2.com and hit http://domain2.com:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome with my browser, it says there's No Wiki at that address...] Thanks!

Problems setting up multiple servers

Hi all, I just downloaded XWiki to evaluate it. From the list of features, it looks like it might be the best out there. But, I can't figure out how to get multiple wikis to work. I pointed two domains at my XWiki server. I created an XWikiServerClass. I created XWiki.XWikiServerDomain1 and XWiki.XWikiServerDomain2 and set their servers to be www.domain1.com and www.domain2.com, respectively with owner XWiki.admin. I set xwiki.virtual=1 and restarted tomcat. It looks like they're both still working out of the "xwiki" database in MySql rather than creating their own database. If I make a change on the wiki in domain1, the same change appears in domain2. They aren't two separate wikis. If I get rid of the www. at the beginning of one of the "server" fields, it redirects to the "This wiki does not exist" page. So, I can't seem to get virtual wikis working. Any ideas? I'd really like to choose XWiki for this (hopefully big) project. Thanks so much!

translation of the documentation (ie. in french)

hello, I m new user of XWiki, and i want to help the xwiki "community" translating the documentation (ie. in french). I was starting doing it on xwiki.com on the "Admin guide" some days before but without any permission. So today, i asked you here how must we process ? I got a mail from Vincent Massol and so, some questions are : - how can't we be sure that the french version of the documentation will be an updated version ? - how prevent new information(s) on the french version that wouldn't appear on the english one ? - what will be the interact(s) between a french and an english version ? This is my opinion, but of course we must discuss about this : If we see the wikipedia contribution process, then there is one wiki instance for each language. The only interact is an interlang link between article(s). Differents versions could be, and (often) are different ! I think we must do the same for xwiki documentation. Got a dirty version of the documentation is better than nothing! Vincent was talking to me about starting a french instance of xwiki website. I think : maybe not, this is a good idea ! For me, french and english community of xwiki can progress on 2 distinct ways without any problem. Sure, there will be some people to make bridge.. Is panel wizard broken in b5 ?

Hi, I've downloaded xWiki 1.0beta 5 and tried to use the panel wizard to have both columns. After clicking on "save the new layout" a popup tells me that it's ok ("the layout has been saved properly"). But after, when I go to any other page, the right columns disapears (like if the layout wasn't taken into account). I know that this worked on b4. Was there any changes or is that a bug ? email user validation, captcha

I must be looking in the wrong places, I'm having trouble setting up either email validation as I would expect it to work, or captcha, and I'm not sure where the documentation is for it... In the 'preferences' tabs (I'm running the svn tips 1674 + b1.5 xar), I have email host and admin email address- which I have sending the email- but, after it sends the confirmation email, the user seems to be actually registered, it isn't waiting for a response, for that matter, there doesn't seem to exist the configurations I would expect of a mechanism for it _to_ listen for a response. Does this mean that I'm supposed to manually set the rights to require a group membership, then manually look for responses? Or create a script that listens for email responses and adds users to the "verified" group? I'm missing major chunks of how to get it to work. Also, I have not found the option or tab or preference (or documentation) for the 'captcha' functionality. Probably I just need to be pointed in the right direction? Desired functionality: - Registration first requires passing a captcha test. - The user enters their email address. - Their verification email is sent, with some kind of GUID. - Their ID is created in some 'locked- waiting for confirm' limbo. - XWiki receives their email and confirms that it has the GUID. - Their status is changed from 'locked' to 'normal registered user'. o What parts of this are currently implemented? o What parts of this are wishful thinking? o Where can I find documentation and help? -Thanks, -Tom -- May 4, 1970: Alison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, William Schroeder.

Installation problems

Help in choosing a code name for the 1.0 skin

Instantiating arbitrary Java classes in XWiki pages

In several instances to date I have found that I can instantiate an arbitrary Java class from a page (with programming rights) if it has a default (i.e. no-parameters) constructor, since java.lang.Class.newInstance() does the trick (where the Class object is obtained by a reference to $xwiki.class). However, to use a non-default constructor, one must use java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Object...). Every attempt to do this has failed silently. Indeed, even calling Class.getDeclaredConstructor(Class...) fails; the only way I've managed to get a Constructor object is by looping through the results of Class.getDeclaredConstructors() and picking the one that suits my needs. No errors in logfiles, and so far I haven't even caught it in the act while debugging it under Eclipse. Two possibilities present themselves, though so far my investigation has not yielded any result in either direction: One is that I'm not passing the arguments correctly - in both cases, the argument list is specified in the javadocs as "<typename>..." but in the source, while the formal parameter is an array, other code actually invokes it as a list, as in the case of a C varargs list. Regardless, I can't invoke it successfully either with an array or with a list. The other is Java permissions. Since the Constructor class is in the java.lang.reflection package, and reflection is (I believe) a potentially restricted operation, it may require changing the java.security.Permission configuration. It looks like, for Tomcat, that's accomplished by editing the catalina.policy file. Anyone else have experience in this area? I know I can always create a plugin to handle the necessary object creation, and I may eventually do so anyway because granting the necessary permission to XWiki's libraries may open it too widely, but for the moment, I'd rather not have to... brain[sic]

Problems importing Panels.PanelWizard on fresh beta 4 install

Is this expected (I was wondering if the dependency on XWIKI.TagClassmean that the XWIKI space needs to imported first... but then I've not seen this behaviour before). Running XWiki on JOnAS : tempdir not set

Hi All, I've installed XWiki on JOnAS 4.8.4 and I have some problems. I start JOnAS using as a unix service with standard user priviledge. I have a problem with the tempdir as when I try to upload a file in XWIki I have the following error displayed : "tempdirnotset" So I've added the following line in xwiki.cfg but it doesn't solve my problem : xwiki.upload.tempdir=${java.io.tmpdir}/xwiki In fact, the variable "java.io.tmpdir" is set by JOnAS and is set to "/tmp". STEP (1) Backup the existing database using pg_dump with --data_only and --attribute-inserts STEP (2) Create a new database with the XWiki 1.0Beta schema (schema_pre.sql) STEP (3) Restore the data into the new database STEP (4) Update the new database schema to be full compatible with the 1.0Beta schema (schema_post.sql) STEP (5) Start XWiki 1.0B3 The detailed procedure is outlined in schema_pre.sql. FYI: Wanting to display a number of bulleted items in a single table column, the bullets are not displayed as bullets, but as asterisks. WYSIWYG editing displays the table with the bullets, as intended. Single Sign On

Hmm, probably more directed at the xwiki dev team; and anyone out there who's using LDAP for authentication. I was looking over a few of my listed user requests this morning, and it struck me just how often folks are having problems with user passwords. To combat that, LDAP is most likely going to be our priority implementation (don't think there will be many problems with that, it's quite nicely documented). HOWEVER, This got me to thinking about the single sign-on (SSO) which is practically a given for users that are on any sort of directory service when considering major applications - for example, Outlook, Google's office suite, etc. I was wondering if anyone had given some thought to how this may work with Xwiki? Granted, it's not a critical issue, but surely there is some benefit to users having an automatic logon based on their already-authenticated network authentication? ColdFusion MX 7 and xwiki

I am trying to get xwiki to run under ColdFusion MX7 server running with IIS 5. I added the classpath to root/xwiki in ColdFusion, but we can't get xwiki to run. Are we overlooking something? Can xwiki run under ColdFusion MX7 server and IIS?

Problems with CSS

I imported the default pages from the XWiki homepage, everything looks fine except for the frontpage. It seems like a CSS problem. I've tried to view the page in Firefox 2.0 and IE6. In IE6 the panel menu ( which is supposed to be located right) appears in the top-left corner. In Firefox it appears bottom-left. Sometimes it displays correctly, but not as often as it displays incorrect. XWiki configuration change

Hey there, I was looking at skins for xwiki, as I am not that fond of the default xwiki10b1 and I found xwiki10. This skin looks good, but unfortunately the registration link is broken (linking to a page that does not exist). Can someone point me to a way to fix this or indeed if there is a nice clean (more compact) skin available for general use? Thanks, Andy

LDAP Groups

Hi, Having XWiki 1.0B3, I ran into 3 issues around LDAP (we use Novell eDirectory). Before, I would like to say that XWiki runs fine against eDirectory through the LDAP interface! (It was a little bit tricky to set up and it would be great if someone could write up some more detailed documentation on it.) Here are the configuration parameter that I used: xwiki.authentication.ldap=1 xwiki.authentication.ldap.authclass=com.xpn.xwiki.user.impl.LDAP.LDAPAuthServiceImpl xwiki.authentication.ldap.server=dsmaster xwiki.authentication.ldap.check_level=1 xwiki.authentication.ldap.port=389 xwiki.authentication.ldap.base_DN=department=USER,department=INFORMATIK,department=1230,o=MP xwiki.authentication.ldap.bind_DN=cn={0},department=USER,department=INFORMATIK,department=1230,o=MP xwiki.authentication.ldap.bind_pass={1} xwiki.authentication.ldap.UID_attr=uid .... 1. In our LDAP structure (about 2000 employees) the users that should have access to XWiki are in multiple department nodes in the LDAP structure. Thus, I cannot specify a single pattern of the kind cn={0},department=USER,department=INFORMATIK,department=1230,o=MP for authentication. How could I specify users from different departments to have access to XWiki? (E.g. can I specify multiple xwiki.authentication.ldap.bind_DN lines?) 2. We cannot allow ALL users in the LDAP structure to have access to XWiki. We would like to specify an LDAP group for all users that have access to XWiki. How could we configure this? Our eDirectory allows annonymous browsing. (It is not the probably harder issue that we would want to use a LDAP groups for page access rights. I am talking about the simpler issues of just controlling the list of users that have access to XWiki from an identity system behind LDAP.) 3. Current behavior is, that 1. I can login with a user/pwd authenticated against LDAP/eDirectory. If the user does not already exist in XWiki, the user appears to be created. 2. A user, created in XWiki CANNOT Login anymore, if he/she is not an LDAP user. (Why is that?) 3. The old passwords do not work anymore for users with a matching entry in XWiki and LDAP. (ok) Why can't I add user per hand if I use LDAP? This would at least allow some Workaround for some departments. Can I hope for XWiki 1.0 to include the handling of an LDAP group for authentication? I have read a blog mentioning LDAP group support being planned for 1.0. Is this still the case?
