The best solution we found is to display the Watch Reader interface in it's own xwiki skin, which is a very stripped version of the original xwiki skin (header.vm and footer.vm) to avoid DOM & CSS manipulation.
Committed this fix in r10981 in trunks and r10982 in 1.0 branch.
