it seems you're usign InnoDB tables which handle references correctly.
But I don't know much about MySQL. In fact the only thing I know about
MySQL which is interesting in this situation, that only InnoDB serves

AFAIK the update works with MySQL 5, but I'm not sure. Until yesterday I
did read much mails on this list.

While the database layout from 0.9.840 is updated to the new layout of
1.0b3 there seem to be some data sets which are referenced in other
tables and because of that the new layout can't be applied.

Perhaps it is possible to do the update when those data sets are
deleted, but I don't know whether these data sets are only of temporary
interest (session stuff, locks, ...) or if they are needed permanently.
If they are needed, deleting them would be harmful.
