The only difference I see is that with the custom picker it's possible to enter non-existing users (it's free form text).
I don't think this was a real use case, but it's still possible to have non-existant users programmatically (i.e. during import), which is a use case (when some of the listed author don't have a user profile on the wiki, or it cannot be found at least).
