Maybe an option is to use an inline macro block in BlockNote to insert inline images. Our client-side BlockNote processor could take care of mapping inline images to an inline macro call on load, and the other way around on save. We'd have to adapt the image wizard to have a different output depending on whether the caret / selection is in an inline context or not.
