| Description: |
Design the pickers used to set the filters and the sort of the Records macro in its Edit Macro dialog (the "Filter & sort" tab). The goal is a design proposal to discuss and validate before any implementation work is filed. Context The Records macro (XWIKI-24831, designed in XWIKI-24611) displays the objects of an object type. Its filters and sort parameters set which entries readers see and in which order. The first implementation uses suggest inputs in the Edit Macro dialog:
- Filters: each item is a field and a value. The operator is the one the field's type defines, and cannot be chosen.
- Sort: an ordered list of fields, each with a direction (ascending, descending, default order).
These inputs work, but they are hard to read and to edit once several filters or sort criteria are set. They also cannot express what readers can do in the Live Data itself (choosing an operator, combining several constraints on the same field). Questions the design must answer
- Filters: how to pick a field, an operator and one or more values, with a value input that matches the field type (date range, list values, users, pages).
- Sort: how to add, remove and reorder the sort criteria, including with the keyboard.
- Feedback: how fields that no longer exist, cannot be filtered or cannot be sorted are shown (today they are marked in the picker and reported by a warning when the table is displayed).
- Page metadata: how the page metadata fields (Page Title, Last Author, Date, ...) are offered next to the fields of the object type.
- Space: the dialog is narrow and is also used on small screens.
Unifying with Live Data Live Data already has filter and sort panels for readers. Consider unifying the Records macro pickers with them, so that authors and readers use the same UI and both benefit from the same improvements. The design should state whether to reuse the Live Data panels in the dialog, extract shared components used by both, or keep separate UIs, and why. Known Live Data panel issues to take into account: XWIKI-18274 and XWIKI-20040. Expected outcome
- UI mockups for the filter and sort pickers.
- A decision on unifying with the Live Data filter and sort panels.
- A forum proposal, then implementation issues filed from the agreed design.
