Quite useful. IMHO units should be translated like any other thing, not having them translated feel a bit like reading "Claude a couru 100 meters en 30 seconds". It feels a bit out of place. Software usually translate units, I don't see a good reason for XWiki not to do the same. I won't die on this hill neither though.
To me, it looks like you could quite easily introduce those translations keys like these and the code wouldn't be difficult to adapt:
