Import a few contrib projects from jira.xwiki.org and compare them with Jira, using the checklist on the design page (section "Checks for each import"): https://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/JiraToOpenProjectMigration

Check that an import account outside the security-level groups doesn't import confidential issues or restricted comments.

First import done on 2026-10-16 (a 10-issue project).

First test import done on 2026-10-16: the XPRISMJS project (10 issues, 5 comments, 5 attachments, 8 versions) imported from jira.xwiki.org into a test OpenProject 18.0 instance with the OpenProject Jira migrator, using a personal access token (Jira Server 9.3 works). Every issue and version was then compared with Jira through both REST APIs, using a comparison script.

Kept correctly

  • All 10 issues, with the same keys (XPRISMJS-1 to XPRISMJS-10)
  • Summary, type, priority, status, assignee, reporter (as author)
  • Created and updated dates, comment authors and dates, attachment content, authors and dates
  • Fix Versions (as Target versions), Affects Versions (as "Observed in versions")
  • All versions, with released state and release date
  • Custom fields with data (Documentation, Documentation in Release Notes, Tests, Difficulty)
  • Jira markup for lists, noformat blocks and URLs
  • No notifications sent: the created users are locked

Differences

  • Inline images stay as raw Jira markup when the file name contains spaces (all macOS screenshots); even when recognised, they become broken relative links. Known as JIM-53; the spaces detail was added there.
  • Attachment names: spaces are replaced by underscores
  • Resolution and resolution date lost; resolved issues are only "Closed" (JIM-149)
  • Labels lost (JIM-109)
  • Links to issues in other projects lost, since the target isn't imported in the same run (JIM-76)
  • History imported as text entries by the "System" user ("Imported changes by ..."), with close changes grouped; the creation entry already holds the final values, so the initial state of an issue isn't visible
  • Jira watchers not imported (JIM-180); author and assignee added as watchers
  • Comment edit dates lost, extra blank lines between paragraphs, issue keys in text not turned into links (minor)
  • Every author, assignee and commenter becomes a project member with a "JiraMember" role; the project is created private and without parent (to set by hand)

Not covered by this project: components, sub-tasks, restricted comments, remote links, votes.

The learnings are on the design page: the data mapping and the "Checks for each import" checklist, which every later test import and dry run goes through (including components, sub-tasks, and checking that restricted comments and confidential issues are absent): https://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/JiraToOpenProjectMigration

Closing. The next imports are covered by XINFRA-515 (contrib dry run).
