With HTTP client 3 every request created its own unpooled client, so never closing anything was harmless. They now share the pooled client of TestUtils, whose 5 connections per route were exhausted after a handful of requests: every following request then failed after the 3 minutes connection request timeout, which made the whole IT stage time out on CI. * buffer the content before closing, both to keep it readable for the tests, which use the response long after it was returned, and so that the connection is released for reuse instead of being discarded.
