That indentation is outside the Velocity macro, so nothing gobbles it: it survived as a text node after the last block, and the renderer therefore wrapped the whole pane content, the block level elements included, in a single paragraph. This is what made the HTML5 validation of the user profile fail once these UI extensions stopped being rendered through a cleaning {{html}} macro.
