Hello devs, Recently, a new version of the XWebIDE ( http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/XWebIDE+Application) has been published which added the ability to work with Nested spaces in the application. In order to progress with the development of the extension, we've made a list of future relevant features to add to the application. We'd now like to have your opinion about the importance of each one of them (order the features based on their priority) and your ideas for new ones. We'd also like to know what are the required features which make you believe you'll use the application in the future. Nice work! :) BTW I see in the doc "Add the Syntax Highlighting extension or Auto-Completion extension to your wiki to have these functionnalities in the XWebIDE editors.”. I feel it would be much nicer for users to have this app add automatic dependencies on autocompletion and syntax highlighting extensions.

Indeed, I meant from a touchscreen. I do develop apps on my ipad (using Codea in Lua FWIW). In addition we’ve defined some style guide for all our UI/buttons so that they work on touchscreens, it would just be a pity to forget this and have the WebIDE app have its own rules/styles IMO. While I agree that this does not seem like the spontaneous thing one would wish, I believe it is a trend that is useful to follow. I was at a symposium on informatics education at school recently and the majority of software tools were discussed with a focus on mobiles, mostly tablets. Missing that wave in such a modern IDE sounds like a bad idea. I guess that accepting that the width has a minimum would be ok. Paul Marius Dumitru Florea wrote:

Vincent I removed your change from the HIDE_EDIT_MODES option because it has not been universally agreed that it must work on mobile devices and as it is not currently tested on such devices, making it work and/or making sure it works is a task which requires effort like the rest so I have added a new item, MOBILE_DEVICES to the list. With this new item, perhaps people may want to re-evaluate your votes ? I will propose we take the 2 highest voted options using the Condorcet method and proceed to make mockups and user-stories for these, then we may request more feedback and do another iteration. Finally: Caty do you suppose you could do an analysis on this application and provide us with usability feedback ? We are specifically interested to know: A. How the application should be integrated in the platform (where you click to make it open) B. What should be displayed in the side panel, what should be available to click on by a developer in the application. Of course we also want to know anything else which comes to mind. That’s fine! Note that none of the points have been universally agreed :) I’ve also reworded HIDE_EDIT_MODES. Note that I had put a question on WIKI_* as i don’t understand what it’s about and the description seems not related to WebIDE.

Yes we cannot trust any votes if not all the columns have been filled. I think the process is a bit wrong and the first mail should have been about brainstorming a list of items, before doing any vote. But we’ll get there anyway (with a bit of churn).
I will propose we take the 2 highest voted options using the Condorcet method and proceed to make mockups and user-stories for these, then we may request more feedback and do another iteration.
Finally: Caty do you suppose you could do an analysis on this application and provide us with usability feedback ? We are specifically interested to know: A. How the application should be integrated in the platform (where you click to make it open) B. What should be displayed in the side panel, what should be available to click on by a developer in the application. Of course we also want to know anything else which comes to mind.

This would require some work from my part, so we might need to add it to the roadmap. When defining the AWM design I made this proposal in 2011 design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ApplicationWithinMinutesProposal http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ApplicationWithinMinutes... which had the structure similar to an IDE.
A. How the application should be integrated in the platform (where you click to make it open)
The logical place to access the IDE would not be a self-contained application, but something similar to an Edit mode. I don't understand why you've used the View mode. We should extend the content menus (especially the Edit one) and let the IDE application add its access point in there. We could place it near 'Edit objects' or 'Edit class' and maybe in the future even replace those editors (if the quality will be high enough). I also state again Vincent's point about declaring Syntax app as dependency. I wasn't able to edit a page I defined part of the project or not even expand the side panel tree, but I guess this app is still in the early versions. Thanks, Caty

The integration inside the Edit menu should be done with extensions points. Also we need to find a way to define an application and provide thie IDE editor just for applications.
