Hi

I have a blog up and running with XWiki (http://madplanet.com/blog) but I have problems to create an RSS feed for it.

I tried to use the snippet on:

http://code.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Applications/BlogApplication

but that does not work. The resulting XML is empty (only the XML header is there).

Weird, in a fresh install I have the icon and it redirects to http://localhost:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/GlobalBlogRss?xpage=plain which gives me an RSS feed of blog articles out of the box...

Did you modify / import some files along the way when setting your wiki up?

Guillaume

Actually you do have a RSS feed for your blog already ;-) http://madplanet.com/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/GlobalBlogRss?xpage=plain Guillaume

...

Using the Blog Category Panel gives me links to the the Category Feeds but these feeds all point to the category 'Personal' no matter what category I put into.

Could that be an issue with an outdate document (from 1.8 or so) ?

How would I create a RSS Feed for the entire blog (all categories) and more specific is there a way to make the RSS feed symbol come up (on the Main.Blog site) in the address bar (blue-white RSS symbol on the right hand side) ?

Thanks

To add the RSS icon at the top of the page, go to

http://madplanet.com/xwiki/bin/admin/XWiki/XWikiPreferences?editor=globaladm...

and replace the following content at the bottom of the textarea next to HTTP Meta Information :

#if($doc.fullName != "XWiki.XWikiLogin") <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Wiki Feed RSS" href="$xwiki.getURL('Main.WebRss', 'view', 'xpage=rdf')" /> <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Blog RSS Feed" href="$xwiki.getURL('Blog.GlobalBlogRss', 'view', 'xpage=plain')" /> #end

This should do the trick.

Hi Guillaume I will start tomorrow working on that. One thing I noticed is that the Blog Categories' RSS Feeds all point to the last category (or at least it seems) which in my case is the category Personal. This the RSS Feed link: http://madplanet.com/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/CategoryRss?xpage=plain&category=Bl... but the Home Page / Site Location URL is: http://madplanet.com/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/Personal Because of the difference with RSS Feed of the entire blog I would think that the RSS Feed is broken. The page is completely out of date and I think it talks about XWiki Enterprise 1.0 while the current blog started with XWiki Enterprise 1.8 thus it needs a complete rewrite. I'd be happy to help you once you've started updating the page.

Yes. You need to go to http://madplanet.com/bin/edit/Blog/RssCode?editor=wiki and replace the content at line 113:

Yes. You need to go to http://madplanet.com/bin/edit/Blog/RssCode?editor=wiki and replace the content at line 113:

<title>$title</title> -> replace $title with the content of your choice

No this is not the right way. You go to the blog home page and edit objects. Then change the title.

I tried Guillaume's link above but got an 404.

It is there: http://madplanet.com/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/GlobalBlogRss?xpage=plain

Eventually it dawned on me that I maybe used the wrong RSS Feed. So I changed the 'Blog.GobalBlogRss' with 'Blog.BlogRss' and now I get the correct title in the RSS Feed.

The new blog application allows to have more than one blog in the same wiki (you can have one in each space). The GlobalBlogRss aggregates all the articles in the wiki, regardless of the blog they belong to. BlogRss aggregates only the articles from one blog. Now, the coincidence is that the default blog is also an aggregated blog, meaning that it collects articles from the entire wiki, too, so the result is the same for GlobalBlogRss and BlogRss without any other query parameters. The difference is that BlogRss uses the title of the Blog.WebHome blog, while the GlobalBlogRss displays the title of the wiki.

Thanks. I think slowing I am getting the hang of it on how to use XWiki.

Well, I started my first steps in open-source back when Richard Oeberg was still working on JBoss. So I am used not to give up too early, on the other hand I have some much to do including 4 kids that sometimes I just cannot afford to spend days after days on something just for fun.

On the other hand I really think that XWiki needs a 1/2 hour primer that explains how to install it, how to do basic configuration and how to customize it. I slowly see the hidden features of XWiki but I can imagine that for many that hurdle is too high and so they give up early.

See http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XE-392 , this is planned. It's more a user getting started guide, we'd probably need to add some more administration information to it.

I was playing around with Liferay for a while and it is easy to get started and to bring a web site to life. But then many of their features are so limited like Blog, Wiki, Content Management that I stopped using it. That said I would love if XWiki could distribute a Version bundled with Jetty and a basic configuration already installed. Even yesterday when I started to push XWiki to the production server I couldn't remember why I couldn't login until I click on the Administrator button (top right) where I finally was redirected to the Import page. Such a bundle together with a short introduction to the XWiki environment would help many users to go over the initial hump where the start to appreciate XWiki a lot.

We have such a bundle, the default distribution package consists of XWiki + Jetty + HSQLDB. It is very easy to use (we even have a .jar installer for all the platforms, and a .exe for Windows), and many users appreciated this package for its ease of use compared to the installation instructions for other wikis. The problem with it is that it is not meant for production use, so sooner or later a sysadmin will have to get his hands dirty with the war and the installation/administration documentation. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/
