[xwiki-devs] [POPOSAL] Add some automatic mail notification
Hi devs, I'm thinking since a long time that the wiki really lack some automatic mail notification and here are some very simple ones that would improve wiki contributor life I think (I would love to have theses on xwiki.org for example.): 1) Automatically add a page to your watchlist when you modify it a) all the time b) only for major modification (not tagged as minor edit) c) only when you create a new page + Possible to disable it in the profile and you can easily remove the page from your watchlist. + Disable it for all users needed ? 2) Automatically send you a mail a) when there is any comment in a page where you have yourself a comment b) only when someone answer recursively to one of your comments + Possible to disable it in your profile + Disable it for all user needed ? Here is my +1 for 1b and 2b as default. WDYT ? -- Thomas Mortagne

Yep me too.
1) Automatically add a page to your watchlist when you modify it a) all the time b) only for major modification (not tagged as minor edit) c) only when you create a new page
+1 for all options. This should be configurable in your profile.

I don't think so. When someone answer to a comment I made I expect to know about it by default for example and that's how it's working for all the website I can think of. I'm less sure for 1) but I think notify by default is the good way too. My vote logical for 1 is that when you start participating a page you want to be notified of the modification made to this subject. That's how it's working for jira for example.

+1 too. I'm in favor of notification being on by default and letting users opt-out easily (better discoverability of the feature). Guillaume On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 11:01, Sorin Burjan <[email protected]> wrote:

Something like looking at user profile configuration and then fallback on some configuration at xwiki.properties level ?

Why not. I just do not feel comfortable changing this without a way to keeping the old behavior. This seems to me not good for those who are upgrading. In the same time, I agree that the default should enable notification to expose the feature. -- Denis Gervalle SOFTEC sa - CEO eGuilde sarl - CTO

Hi Thomas, These is indeed a useful feature, but it should definitely be configurable (with the possibility to disable it) at the wiki level as well, not just in the user profile. Not every wiki admin wants to spam the users with notifications :). Anyway, it should be enabled by default, or otherwise people won't know the feature exists. I've also seen other use cases, such as "Notify everyone when a certain type of document is created". Maybe this could be taken into account later, in future developments. +1 in general to the idea, and for 1b and 2b as defaults. I am a little bit afraid of enabling by default, because if the hosting machine doesn't have a SMTP server (or one configured by the Admin) or some missing configured-out-of-the-box thing, our mailsender plugin will output a lot of stack-trace errors. Regards, Sorin B.

Well that's a mail plugin specific issue, we could add some better configuration in it but it has nothing to do with this proposal, anyone can still produce the same result by using watch list feature.

I'm +100 on live email notifications. I had already proposed some additions to "mail this page" http://markmail.org/thread/dnwgtgfq4nnwz7nv to include "live" (not watchlist) subsription to changes. I perfectly agree that we need some live subscriptions. I'm +1 for 1b As for 2/ I'm not completely sure about the fully automated solution limited only to direct replies to your comments. First I think we probably need also to allow that for participants to the content, and we also need an unsubscribe mecanism. So whenever you make an edit or a comment, you should have one or more "checkboxes" which are checked by default For a content edit: [ ] Email me about changes to this page [ ] Email me about comments to this page For a comment [ ] Email me about replies to my comment [ ] Email me about all comments to this page [ ] Email me about changes to this page The issue here is that this requires storing these subscriptions somewhere, whereas the 2b/ solution you propose can be done automatically (except for the unsubscribe). I believe in the end we should have a full "live" subscribe mecanism to a page, so we will need the subscription storage anyway. Also we could image "instant messenging" notification in addition to mail notification. So we should go for the more complete solution right away. So to summarize: I'm +1 for 1b right away I'm -1 for 2b but +1 for a more complete solution Ludovic Le 30/03/11 09:27, Thomas Mortagne a écrit :

It's not only direct replies, see the listed modes (that I was planning to make configurable).
First I think we probably need also to allow that for participants to the content, and we also need an unsubscribe mecanism.
For content users that's kind of 1/ already including unsubscribe simply by removing the document from your watchlist (but yes it's not live by default unless you setup your watchlist to be live if that's possible).
So whenever you make an edit or a comment, you should have one or more "checkboxes" which are checked by default For a content edit:
[ ] Email me about changes to this page [ ] Email me about comments to this page
For a comment
[ ] Email me about replies to my comment [ ] Email me about all comments to this page [ ] Email me about changes to this page
The issue here is that this requires storing these subscriptions somewhere, whereas the 2b/ solution you propose can be done automatically (except for the unsubscribe).

Sure a complete solution would be great but there is no way I have time or desire to work on that so it's either 2/ or nothing from my side. Is 2/ that blocker the way it is defined ?
