Hello devs, as suggested before, I would like to make the main page of the wiki a full dashboard, namely to relocate the welcome message in a gadget so that the type of page of the main page is more clear. It adds too much weight on the visual aspect and does not bring any value. IMO the dashboard should be something invisible, like magic somehow for the editor, not for the viewer. The editor should benefit from all the advantages a dashboard system offers: easily add new modules, configure or manage existing ones, without writing too much code. I don't understand why if we have a new feature ("dashboard") we should emphase it like this: changing the look of the homepage, changing the title. I don't want my homepage to look like JIRA. My wiki should be based and focused on the content, not on the back techniques I use. With the panels style I'm more focused that I use 4 types of gadgets, than to actually see what is the content of those gadgets. So what if the user will not know that we have now dashboards? They will see that if they go to edit mode. This feature will help them achieve things faster, but is not necessary to change the way they were doing things until now. "Home" or "Home page" is for me much better than "Welcome to your wiki" since it actually describe what the home page is. Jerome

As Cati mentioned it, for end users (viewers) it doens't matter whether it's a dashboard or not. What they should see is simply a page with blocks of content. They don't care whether it's generated through a dashboard or static HTML or whatever. Now for the title, it's better that it reflects the content of the page IMO.

I'm trying to answer this subthread but I don't understand what the problem is. What does this "users don't care it's a dashboard or not" thing? What does it refer to? To the usage of the "dashboard" macro? Who said users should know? Is it because the page would be called "dashboard"? That's ok, dashboard means actually "dashboard" as in "car dashboard", main thing that you see when you jump in your wiki and start driving it, it does not mean a technology... Is it the way it looks that makes it too technical? Is it bad that it's in squares in columns? I agree that panels style looks bad in default colortheme, in other colorthemes looks a bit better. In any case if this is the issue it's not an issue of the main page, it's an issue of the UI of the dashboard macro in general. Or regardless of these aspects, our Main.WebHome is not a dashboard, is something else? I strongly believe that it's a dashboard, from the pov of the semantics: it has various "gadgets" that aggregate content from various sources in the wiki providing the user with an overview and a starting point for his wiki. FYI, I created an issued for this change at http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XE-922 and I'm starting to prepare the commit (I implemented it in my local instance). I read again yday Cati's comments, and I think I understand them now. As I wrote in the issue description, basically the change, for the end user, is only a slight visual change of the position of the welcome message, with great benefits on the editing side. So I will go on with this change... Advanced users should still be able to edit the page as "just content", by choosing Edit -> Wysiwyg, and for simple users, from the input I have, it's of greater value to be able to easily edit as gadgets than as "just content". Hi Anca, Opinions: - We need to come to a conclusion with the Title naming. Right now having 'Wiki Home' for the Main.WebHome would suggest to use something like 'Space Home' for every other space, instead of WebHome. See also http://xwiki.markmail.org/thread/sf5os7ihxeltz7s3 - It's very nice that the position of the text in now inside and the Add buttons are up. It gives them better visibility. Also the previous warning message was a bit scary for the end user. - We need to change 'See space administration' icon which is a cog.gif now with wrench.gif (just like in the action menu). It is confusing to have the same icon for the gadget settings and when hovering on a space name. - When hovering on a gadget we have the cog icon appearing. We could also have $theme.highlightColor as background for the .gadget-title . We use this standard on items hover (comments, attachments, etc) we could use it here too. - I don't know how to remove a Column. FYI, I created an issued for this change at http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XE-922 and I'm starting to prepare the commit (I implemented it in my local instance).
I read again yday Cati's comments, and I think I understand them now. As I wrote in the issue description, basically the change, for the end user, is only a slight visual change of the position of the welcome message, with great benefits on the editing side. So I will go on with this change... Advanced users should still be able to edit the page as "just content", by choosing Edit -> Wysiwyg, and for simple users, from the input I have, it's of greater value to be able to easily edit as gadgets than as "just content".

IMO I don't like at all the panels style (WikiDashboardPanels.png<

). It adds too much weight on the visual aspect and does not bring any value. IMO the dashboard should be something invisible, like magic somehow for the editor, not for the viewer. The editor should benefit from all the advantages a dashboard system offers: easily add new modules, configure or manage existing ones, without writing too much code. I don't understand why if we have a new feature ("dashboard") we should emphase it like this: changing the look of the homepage, changing the title. I don't want my homepage to look like JIRA. My wiki should be based and focused on the content, not on the back techniques I use. With the panels style I'm more focused that I use 4 types of gadgets, than to actually see what is the content of those gadgets.
So what if the user will not know that we have now dashboards? They will see that if they go to edit mode. This feature will help them achieve things faster, but is not necessary to change the way they were doing things until now.
As a conclusion, IMO the main page should be "Welcome ...", or "Home"; "Wiki Dashboard" doesn't sound like a starting page for me (unless maybe if I am a technical user, but also not in this case). And the naming is very important because it will prefix all the breadcrumbs.
I like having a dashboard as the home page, it's very logical to me and quite common in lots of tools.
As Cati mentioned it, for end users (viewers) it doens't matter whether it's a dashboard or not. What they should see is simply a page with blocks of content. They don't care whether it's generated through a dashboard or static HTML or whatever.

To the usage of the "dashboard" macro? Who said users should know? Is it because the page would be called "dashboard"? That's ok, dashboard means actually "dashboard" as in "car dashboard", main thing that you see when you jump in your wiki and start driving it, it does not mean a technology...
Is it the way it looks that makes it too technical? Is it bad that it's in squares in columns? I agree that panels style looks bad in default colortheme, in other colorthemes looks a bit better. In any case if this is the issue it's not an issue of the main page, it's an issue of the UI of the dashboard macro in general.
Or regardless of these aspects, our Main.WebHome is not a dashboard, is something else? I strongly believe that it's a dashboard, from the pov of the semantics: it has various "gadgets" that aggregate content from various sources in the wiki providing the user with an overview and a starting point for his wiki. Is _this_ what we don't agree about?

I work for 2 years at XWiki and tested every day snapshots and this is the first time I read that message and didn't provide me anything of help. We could do a help gadget or an introduction gadget (that can be easily removed using the dashboard system) to help new users out.

Technically the welcome message is written in a new page, Main.Welcome, and then included in a gadget in the dashboard. This page can be translated for getting the message in different languages.

WebHome actually means SpaceHome :), "web" is the word used to designate "space" in old, now deprecated, APIs. I agree that it's not very understandable for normal people, especially as 'web' terminology is now deprecated. However, the name of the document stayed the same, WebHome, it's just the title that was changed. From what I can see, the titles of all other (default) spaces are all customized. I need to check what happens with space title when creating a new space, but otherwise I think they are 2 different things, page name is one and title is the other. we can, yes. Just create an issue for the Spaces macro (XE, "Navigation application", I think).
- When hovering on a gadget we have the cog icon appearing. We could also have $theme.highlightColor as background for the .gadget-title . We use this standard on items hover (comments, attachments, etc) we could use it here too.
I don't mind, except that it will be useless in "panels" style dashboard (in which gadgets have, depending on the colortheme, a colored title bar). When you decide upon it, just create an issue in the XWIKI, "Rendering" component. Personally I cannot invest too much time in stirring this discussion, and I don't really have too many proposals.
- I don't know how to remove a Column.
There's no UI for it, but I mentioned how to do it in the dashboard documentation: http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Dashboard +Macro#HChangegadgetspositions . The default style is cleaner but it's not visible that it's a dashboard, we need something to make that more visible.

Needs to be improved to be useful but ok to use the exact same message for now till someone proposes something better. Caty is working in XE/XEM home page in 3.1 timeframe AFAIR.
