Hi devs, XWiki is planning to participate in this year's Google Summer of Code [1]. The organization registration period has already started and the deadline is the 9th of March [2] (a bit more than one week). 1. We need to provide by then a list of proposals and assign mentors for the students that are going to implement them. I would like to ask everybody that wants to participate as a mentor from the XWiki organization to review the proposals [3] list (that is currently empty) and add as many interesting proposals as possible. The proposals can be either new, or they can be revived from previous year proposals. Hi Roman, I`ve forwarded your mail (below) to the dev list. I hope you don`t mind :) As you can see from the XWiki's GSoC organization application form [1], the criteria to be a mentor do not include being a committer. This means that you can be a mentor or even a co-mentor if you need someone more technical to help you help the student. You have some nice ideas and it would be a shame to discuss them in private because some people might like them enough to get involved as well :) We are currently in the brainstorming phase and everybody is encouraged to contribute on the mailing list and on the idea list [2]. Also, in order to qualify as a valid idea, we need some more details that could better explain what the objectives are, both to a student and to the other mentors. Please feel free to provide these details either here or in the ideas list, when adding the idea (recommended). Before students start submitting their applications, we will make sure that there are no invalid ideas listed, so you should not worry about breaking anything. Well we have put it as part of the roadmap for 4.0 (the investigation part at least).
I think it's a nice GSoC project.

The problem with GSOC projects that we want integrated in the platform thereafter is that they usually don't measure up and need to be rewritten and overall take more time that if some committer had done them initially. Actually for it to be a success you need the mentor to be participating as much as the student. I doubt very much we can achieve good results by leisurely following a student's work, on a vital piece like search. Let me rephrase that. It can sure work but I'm pretty sure we'd need to rewrite it. Anyway we can always propose the project and we'll vote when we need to sort our projects if we're selected :) Thanks -Vincent
