[xwiki-devs] Contributing to dutch translation
Hello, I have a few questions about how to contribute to the dutch application_resource file. Yesterday I have added some translations to the dutch translation of the XE resources at the I10n.wiki.org site. Is there any documentation about this site? I am unsure about what some functions do and the effects they may have on others. For instance the link 'Import/reimport default language file', Admin actions like 'Import' and 'Prepare'. Also I noticed that when I get the dutch translation as a application resource file, it only has the resources filled in if a dutch translation exists. This seems logical, but as long as not all strings have a dutch translation, my xwiki contains lots of empty strings. Is there a way to build a resource file with dutch translations where available, and the default english strings when not? Another thing that is not clear to me is the functionality around reviewing and validation. If I find a translation that is incorrect of I thing there is a better one, can I just change it, or should I somehow make a review request to somebody authorized to accept or reject the change? Is there any way to know who is contributing to the same translation in order to achieve some common ideas about how to translate xwiki terms? Thanks, Henk -- == Henk F. Import is only to be used for initial import of a language. Prepare is run in the overnight process.

It is not normal that your wiki has empty strings. Normally it automatically falls back to the translation in ApplicationResources.properties when it cannot find one in the language file. This is why normally ApplicationResources.properties and ApplicationResources_en.properties are the same. Maybe there is an issue there and they are different ?

Reviewing is there so that at some point if we have more translators we can have some that are more trusted than others and act as reviewers. If a translation already exists and is changed then it will only be output if the translation has been reviewed. At this point we don't have enough translators, so you could act as your own reviewer, or ask a friend to ask as a reviewer. Having two looks is a good thing in any way so I would prefer we keep the 2 steps.

You can change it. As we don't have any official responsible person for Dutch translations it's ok if you auto review it.

I suggest we create a space on the Wiki so that volunteer translators list themselves and communicate. At this point it's the right place here to tell that you are interested in Dutch translations. Welcome to the translator world ! Ludovic
Thanks, Henk

Actually i think i know what is the issue: when you ask for formated resource file all the keys are listed, even the empty one. The translation system go to default translation only if there is no translation provided for a key, empty is valid. I think l10n should skip empty translations.

Ok I fixed it.. If it's still time you might want to recommit the translations files since they are now generated without the keys with empty values Ludovic

I fixed them already directly with a regexp

Anyway i will recommit all to normalize since i seen there is lots of translations files not based on l10n which makes impossible to compare them.
