[xwiki-devs] [VOTE] New default color theme for XE3.0
Hi devs, One thing that was neglected in the preparation of 3.0 is a fresh default color theme for this new release cycle. What I propose is to use by default a theme similar with the current xwiki.org themes: dark grey menus and panel headers, and a lively colored page header. Besides bringing a fresh look to the default wiki, this combination has the advantage of having been used and tested on xwiki.org for several months, so there will be no unpleasant surprises (like wrong contrasts) coming with this change. Here are two themes that follow this pattern, both having a stylish gradient as header image: - orange: http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Extension/Soft+Orange+ColorTheme - blue: http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Extension/Soft+Blue+ColorTheme My +1 goes for using the orange version as default color theme in 3.0. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

I'm definitely +1 for a new default color theme for the 3.0 cycle. I'm afraid the two themes proposed still have two strong colors for menu background color / panel header background color. I think it will look odd on a dashboard for example. I'd like to see something less aggressive in this area, WDYT ? Otherwise my vote would go for the blue proposition Jerome

Even if it's not perfect, it's a starting point, and it shows something fresh for 3.0.

Here's an idea: for each (final) release of the 3.x cycle, we use a different color. Ciprian also has a green one already. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/
I'm +1 for a new color theme. I'm -1 for changing it on each release, because we need to have a bit of visual identity. Currently I'm not overwhelmed by any of the proposals. I think XWiki really needs a nice default "neutral" color theme that is simple and not aggressive in any way. It should make people ok with having that as a public web site if they don't want to work on their own. It should be simple and use usual colors to please the majority. Right now the "grey" is too aggressive. Especially for the "Edit" menu bar. It generates a too big contrasts with the main color. I'm in general not liking this menu bar more and more. It stands out too much and in my view would be better as buttons on a white background, which something making the "edit" button stands out more than the others. Also the look is too "square" which makes it a bit aggressive too. If we are going to change something we should go for: - soft coloring - make the menu bars integrate better, especially the "edit" one - more rounding - a bit of color fading (in the main logo bar) Ludovic Le 26/03/11 15:54, Sergiu Dumitriu a écrit :

Yes, make "edit" button stand out (and look like an action button) would be very nice.
Also the look is too "square" which makes it a bit aggressive too.
Yes, especially the panels, the action bar and the section that displays bottom tabs (history, attachments, etc.)
If we are going to change something we should go for:

I agree that right now is too late for a change (though I kinda like the orange version).

+1 as well. If we want to change the default color theme, let's make it a planned feature and do it right for one of the 3.x releases. Changing it at the last minute just before a major release doesn't feel right to me. Guillaume

I'm very +1 for changing the default color for the new branch but don't have a strong opinion on which one to choose. Also I would suggest we start right now choosing a theme for the trunk too so that we don't do it at the last minute next time (let's put something different and imrpove it during the milestone/rc phase). I won't oppose it if everyone agrees but I'm against changing the color theme so late in the cycle (the release is Monday). For several reasons but the main one is that it's not been tested at all: - not tested on all possible screens; we have to verify the colors are ok everywhere - not tested in the wild for various use cases (web site, intranet, etc) Also I don't see any urgency since this is the first release of the cycle and not the last one, so we have plenty of time. I'd suggest we calmly select a new theme in 3.1 for the rest of the 3.x cycle and then fine tune it for the rest of the cycle releases. Hi devs Quite agree with vincent, it's a bit late in the process. About the color theme itself, to be coherent with communication, would be +1 on the orange version. (OpenSource products have black+orange communication, Cloud has blue communication) Best Grégory GUENEAU | gsm: +33 (0)6 07 01 70 65 | skype : chronopolys | profile : http://fr.linkedin.com/in/gregorygueneau Le 26 mars 2011 à 13:55, Sergiu Dumitriu a écrit :
