[xwiki-devs] [Proposal][UX] Change the user type for the Admin user to 'simple'
Hi, A simple change that could improve the experience for newcomers would be that the default Admin user to have a simple type. One of the problems new users have is that they have too many options in the Edit menu and this can be confusing. The downside is that it will add an additional step for developers/testers to change the user type back (or at least until we provide a Developer user/profile). +1 I think this is an important change that is simple to make and that’ll remove confusion for newcomers. Side note/wish: I’d love a shortcut key that you’d press to make the current user advanced + show hidden docs. And if you press it again it does the opposite. Thanks -Vincent

Is the Admin user that is created a simple user? Two options: 1) either he is, in which case this gives another argument for creating the Admin user as a simple user for the HSQLDB/Jetty packaging 2) either he’s not (ie he’s created as an advanced one) and in this case we should fix that in 2 places (in the HSLQDB/Jetty packaging + in the code that creates the Admin user for the other packagins). Vincent: why not introducing a "Developer" user, in addition of the "Admin", in the Jetty/HSQLDB package? It could even be done on snapshot versions only, since this is what developers use the most. I'm not in favor of introducing a shortcut key because it would concern every users who might engage the shortcut by mistake, resulting in a WTF effect. Moreover, we already have too many shortcuts IMO, and they can be in conflict with browser's ones (think Ctrl+G for example). I believe a "Developer" user is what we really need. I disagree. Shortcuts need to be a combination of keys so that they cannot be done by mistake ofc. All apps have tons of shortkeys. Why is that? Because they’re useful! :)

Actually that wouldn’t solve the problem I had either since it would mean having to navigate to the user profile, make the change, go back to where you were, check the hidden docs, then go back again to your user profile, put back the profile again and navigate back… Doesn’t work! I’m 100% sure that we need a shortcut for this (ie an advanced feature) but we could also need something more visible (I’m not saying that a shortcut is enough but for me it’s the minimum). From my experience, it's true for native apps but for web apps it's not that common, especially since it can conflict with browser's short keys. But I can we wrong. Gmail have shortcuts, Facebook too.

No that shortcut would be enabled for anyone. Similar to Ctrl+G to navigate.

I’d not do this. Instead, on the user profile, in the place where the user can enable/disable “show/hide hidden docs”, I’d simply document the shortcut there in the hint text.

Let me list just 2 that comes to my mind: - The user has deleted some page without checking the “delete” children and there were hidden docs in there and he needs to see what those pages are. In the past, we had users who could not understand why their “page” (actually the space) wasn’t deleted and why they were still seeing a node in the Document Tree for them. - The user is an Admin or an advanced users and need to do some gardening on the wiki and see that pages are located in the right places according to the defined taxonomy. He doesn’t need to be a developer to be a gardnerer (and he doesn’t need to understand the code on those pages either). Right now the “Hide/Show hidden docs” is not a feature attached to any profile and I really believe it’s best to keep it like that (allows for all use cases). Thanks -Vincent

Yes you’re right this is probably only for the Jetty/HSQLDB packaging (since when the Admin user is created through the DW I guess it’s created as a simple user). But it’s even more important in this packaging because that’s the demo package that users are supposed to use to simply test xwiki and thus the UI should be as simple as possible for those newcomers. <side note> We now have packaging stats: 30% of active users are using that packaging. http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/ActiveInstalls/ </side note> Thanks -Vincent

+0 I'm not fully convinced because if you make the Admin profile a simple user then he might miss some features. On the other hand leaving the Admin profile an advanced user might expose him to complex features that he won't understand. I'm not fully convinced because if you make the Admin profile a simple user then he might miss some features. On the other hand leaving the Admin profile an advanced user might expose him to complex features that he won't understand.
Note that this thread can also be considered as simply fixing an inconsistency since when using the non-HSQLDB/Jetty packagings, the Admin user is a simple user already! :) Thanks -Vincent

You're talking about the jetty+hsqldb distribution (the "ZIP Package" available on the download page)? Is this the most used / downloaded distribution? Because the other distributions don't have the Admin user, see http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/ DistributionWizard#HAdminuser .
