[xwiki-devs] [Idea] New default color theme for the 3.0 cycle
Hello friends, What about we create and set default a new color theme for XE, in the 3.0 cycle ? This is a cheap way for us to refresh the look and to differentiate 3.x visually ? We could aslo have new additional themes, besides the default one. Jérôme.
+1 Good idea! Thanks, Marius On 01/11/2011 01:30 PM, Jerome Velociter wrote:

*Another idea 2*: how about we add some CSS3 in the 3.0 cycle? :) We could make it optional in a new css3.css, just like the accessibility stylesheet, for the ones that want their css valid 2.1 or the ones with old browsers usage that don't need it. The main changes for this stylesheet would be support of gradients (background, menus, buttons) regardless of the used color theme. See: http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Improvements/Administration/... http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Improvements/Administration/... *Another idea 3*: Sergiu once proposed to have the new community logo for the 3.0 cycle http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Community/LogoChallengeRound2/16-def... and we could make a color theme using the colors from the logo. +1 to add the new community logo. I know that no final decision has been made regarding the new logo. But I also know that proposal 16 gathered the higher score on the second voting round, so maybe we could consider it as being the official logo and work on refining it (see for example http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Community/LogoChallengeRound2/16-var... - just a personal preference, but it's an example). Otherwise, a new voting round should be organized. Raluca.
Thanks, Caty

Definitely. It would deserve another thread IMO. The css3.css should be activated by default in my opinion.

Hello, The way I see the insertion / creation of additional themes is not necessary by adding new themes to the default XE distribution, but making possible a way to download new themes created by the community members (giving the fact that it's so easy to create a Color Theme). For example, community members could add new themes as extensions (http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/) and a link to these extensions of type Theme could be added on Themes.WebHome page. The main idea is that I would prefer for the community to add and 'exchange' themes on xwiki.org. This way we would encourage the implication of the community members and we would also encourage creativity and diversity. Something new on the default distribution could be related to CSS3 support. Caty has made at one point a very nice Color Theme based on CSS3. And since we talk about dropping IE6 support on 3.0, I think that this would be a proper time to insert more interesting visual elements. Raluca. Sure, but that's not incompatible with changing/refreshing the themes we bundle by default. What we could do however is add a "Color theme" category of extension on http://extension.xwiki.org

In my opinion those are separate concerns. Color themes (or skins) with CSS3 should degrade nicely. Jerome.

I've added a "ColorTheme" type to the extensions page. This can be sorted on the homepage http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ I've also added a ColorTheme example: Cracker http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Cracker+ColorTheme I'll add more and I hope this is the beginning of a major ColorTheme collection :P Thanks, Caty

BTW, I've just played with the color theme editor, and created a theme for the Reader application : http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9788/readertheme.png I think a background with gradient works pretty well when combined with dark menu bar. We could do something like this for this new theme, what do you think ? (I've never been a big fan of the strong menu bar colors on white background as we have right now with the default theme, I think such gradient fixes that issue) Jerome. Hello, Good idea about having new color themes for XE in the 3.0 cycle. +1 for css3.css activated by default (or part of colibri.css). CSS3 is very widely used now around the web and it is no longer seen as a fancy technology but as a necessity. I don`t see the CSS validation as a problem since even the http://www.w3.org/ website doesn`t validate due to CSS3 rules. Thanks, Ciprian. +1, but it should be something more than just different colors. By editing the object directly we can write advanced CSS (3) properties instead of simple colors, which would allow to add gradients, more background images, etc.

-0, we should: - design better looking color themes that would emphasize the strength of color themes - remove the existing ones that aren't good enough - link to the extensions wiki for more color themes - put any additional color themes in the extensions wiki -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

It means it's not editable from the WYSIWYG interface after that ? I'm not convinced if that the case.

Most of it will be editable (color pickers). The background-image UI is still displayed as a text input, and it's there where most of the custom styling can be placed. It just means that instead of putting the name of an attachment in that input, the users will see some complex CSS, like: Banner (header image - the name of an image attached to the theme document) ------------------------------------------------ | -moz-gradient(linear, #900, #993); | background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(...); | border-radius: 1em; ------------------------------------------------ It's not exactly kosher, but it's not uneditable using the wizard.
I'm not convinced if that the case.
