[xwiki-devs] [Brainstorming] French translation for "Distribution Wizard"
Hello, I'd like to get your opinion on what French translation we should use for "Distribution Wizard". So far I've received the following suggestions: * Gestionnaire de distributions * Assistant d'installation * Assistant de distribution Do you prefer one of the above suggestions? Do you have other ideas? Please reply to the present thread with your opinion. Thanks, Silvia

Actually I'm not very fond of the English wording: "Distribution Wizard". For a user it's hard to understand IMO. What about using "Install Wizard" instead and it's used both for first time installs and upgrades? (btw when it's upgrades, the button will be "upgrade" I believe, right?) In which case, we would have in French, "Assistant d'installation". The other French names are not very nice… Thanks -Vincent

"Install" is not accurate because you can do Install, Upgrade, Downgrade or (maybe later) switch flavour. Thanks, Marius

Indeed quite nice, not as specific as Extension Wizard. IMO we also need a setup wizard but it's a more generic wizard for settting up database connection on first run, and other first time params. But we could consider it part of the same wizard, in other steps and call it "Setup Wizard". At least for the end user he can more easily understand "Setup Wizard" than "Distribution Wizard" I think. The distribution wizard goal is already to be used for more than extensions (you simply have only extension related steps right now) so -1 for "Extension Wizard" for me.

I'm thinking of Flavor Wizard/Setup/Manager since we will want to introduce the notion of flavors ? Also flavors is not so technical as distribution. Regards, Sorin B. On Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 4:24 PM, Vincent Massol <[email protected]> wrote:

Switch? What would it do and how would you call it ? I think switching would mean calling from the admin and in this case we could name it differently. Here's we're talking about the wizard that appears when you start your wiki and you've installed a new WAR. "Install Wizard" seems good to me for this use case. Or maybe we should just call it "Extension Wizard" since we don'treally have the terminology of "Distribution" ATM. Maybe in the future when we have the notion of "Flavors" we would call it "Flavor Wizard"... Thanks -Vincent

Simply. The distribution manager already has the notion of "a different distribution" ( https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/blob/master/xwiki-platform-core/xwik... ) which is not the same as "same distribution but different version" (Upgrade/Downgrade). This can happen if you replace the xwiki-flavour-foo war with the xwiki-flavour-bar war, keeping the persistent directory (which contains the distribution status, installed extensions, etc.). In this case when you start XWiki the Distribution Manager detects the distribution change and displays the distribution wizard which suggests you to install the (new) UI associated with the new distribution (flavour) and to remove/upgrade/downgrade whatever extensions you may have installed (in order to work with the new distribution). The framework for all this is already in place. See https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/blob/master/xwiki-platform-core/xwik... . Thanks, Marius

Hello, I think the idea of Version manager is nice. +1 for Upgrade Wizard (or Version Wizard), could be "Gestionnaire de Mise à Jour" in french. For the first start of a wiki, the admin/user should be guided to it, so the name is not, until then, (IMO) so important. But when it comes to upgrade a wiki, an "upgrade wizard" is the place where the user naturally goes. 2012/10/25 Jeremie BOUSQUET <[email protected]>
