[xwiki-devs] GSOC 2009 project idea "Survey Application"
Hi I'm targeting on gsoc 2009. I had went through your idea list. I'm interested in your "Survey Application" project. I need some detail information about the project mainly the SRS. Also I would like to know the technologies you guys going to use. To be honest this is my first time experience with open source community. But I'm confident that I can get familiarized with this project easily because I had done a similar sort of project using EJB3,Hibernate 3,Struts 2 technologies and frameworks to create an online exam center. So hope to work with Xwiki. Thank You ~ Chathura Prabuddha Ganegoda~ Undergraduate, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
Hi, Thanks for you interest. The survey application would mostly use the XWiki technologies since XWiki has it's own object/storage layer and API to manage data (we use Hibernate under that). A lot of the work is UI work to make it easy to create questions and forms and finally reporting. This is mostly scripting interacting with the XWIki API and plugin. There would be some touches of AJAX to make things smooth. There might be some improvements to do to the plugin themselves and that would be java. Generally it is not complex and is a good way to learn XWiki programming and concepts. Ludovic Chathura Prabuddha a écrit :

Hi Ludovic Thanks for the information. Is project in the development phase. If so what is the repository link. So I can download the code. Hope to follow the steps you given. Thank you again Thank you. -- ~ Chathura Prabuddha Ganegoda~ Undergraduate, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
Hi, No there is not start of the survey project. The closest is the Poll application http://code.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Applications/PollsApplication But it's not scalable because it stores all polls result in the same page, thus causing an issue if multiple people respond at the same time Ludovic Chathura Prabuddha a écrit :

Hai Sergiu Dumitriu Thanks for the advice. I'll act upon what you said and I hoping to give positive results for Xwiki. I know it will not be a big challenge because I had learned all the stuffs I mentioned above mails by my self. I'm currently in my internship period at Teamwork Technologies which is going to end up in this month. So I know I can give 100% out of me for the Xwiki. So thanks again for your guidance. -- ~ Chathura Prabuddha Ganegoda~ Undergraduate, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
Hai Ludovic,Sergiu I had created a project application for the "Survey Application". Please Click here <http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=dcgtjf2z_0hdmpbtgx&hl=en> to view it. So through this I hope that I can improve the communication with you.I had included some of my ideas in the project description area. So I need your feedback to resolve any misunderstandings with the ideas. Also according to the communication with you it will be easy to extend my document.I haven't documented architecture and some other parts. Hope to do it next few days after having a better understanding about the project. Meanwhile I'm catching up the development in Xwiki environment. Did some project building, tutorial sort of things. This is an great experience to me.So I would like to keep in touch with you. Thank you.... -- ~ Chathura Prabuddha Ganegoda~ Undergraduate, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.

Programming experience is not all that matters. In the past years really experienced students failed because they didn't communicate enough with the community and failed to understand that their project wasn't a standalone application, but a module that was supposed to be used inside an existing, larger framework, XWiki. Also, programming for XWiki most of the times is easier than it seems, as all the hard technologies are used inside the framework and rarely needs to be touched, so although we do use servlets, struts, hibernate, plexus, restlets and other cool things, they are merely implementation details behind our API. The most important things you need to know is Velocity (which happens to be one of the most simple programming languages) and the XWiki API. Don't read this as discouraging, on the contrary, I'm trying to get you familiarized with what it takes to be successful. Good luck! -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/
