[xwiki-devs] [Proposal] Roadmap for XWiki 5.0
Hi devs, With XWiki 4.x cycle coming to an end soon, it's time to prepare the roadmap for XWiki 5.0. This is a proposal that comes from some internal meetings done with XWiki committers who are working for XWiki SAS. If you're interesting in participating to this release, don't hesitate to add yourself to the list so that everyone can have some visibility of what's going to be worked on during this timeframe! With the work on security module I won't have time to merge something working for 5.0 I think. The API of wiki-stream is pretty much ready and a standard XML based input/output module has been written (mostly for tests) but I won't have time to write database input and XAR output module that I wanted for a first version of a XAR export.

Hi all, I am not a developer, and I hestitated to "highjack" this thread, but what would love to see in XWiki 5.0 is that XWiki becomes a "Responsive Website", making XWiki look good in all resolutions and screensizes. Hi devs, since we are a bit late already and there is still work to do to fully stabilize Jenkins I propose to move 5.0 dates a little: * 5.0M2: ASAP * 5.0RC1: 15 April 2013 * 5.0Final: I won't be able to do a release for the week of the 22 so unless someone wants to do it I propose 29 April 2013 Another possibility is to skip RC and release final on 15 (like we did several times for other versions) but 5.0 is far from being a smal release so a RC and some time to test are not a luxury. I agree that we should release on 22 at latest (that would already be a one week slippage). We'll need some volunteer. I'll be in Iasi, I don't know yet if I'll have any time to do a release at that time so someone else would be good.
Another possibility is to skip RC and release final on 15 (like we did several times for other versions) but 5.0 is far from being a smal release so a RC and some time to test are not a luxury.

We are late again and XWIKI-9041 is not going to be a quick fix (see http://markmail.org/message/e4hmh3gutdnlk46e for more details). So as explained by Denis we have two solutions here: 1) move 5.0RC1 to something like Monday 22nd so that we have enough time to fix and test http://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-9041 2) revert all changes to the hbm done in 5.0.x and probably release tomorrow (time to make sure jenkins is perfectly stable and let us finish testing) and then wait for a better migration solution to be implemented before doing any modification to the database structure WDYT ? With XWiki 4.x cycle coming to an end soon, it's time to prepare the roadmap for XWiki 5.0.
This is a proposal that comes from some internal meetings done with XWiki committers who are working for XWiki SAS.
If you're interesting in participating to this release, don't hesitate to add yourself to the list so that everyone can have some visibility of what's going to be worked on during this timeframe!
If you think some work defined below doesn't go in the interest of the project also feel free to raise issues.

* Continue SOLR implementation - Edy * EM upgrade of subwikis + flavor concept (add Flavor type in EM/Repository) + leftover from 4.x for EM/DW - Thomas + Marius for DW UI part for flavors * AWM work from 4.x to finish (see http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Roadmaps/WebHome) - Marius * scalable import/export - Thomas
With the work on security module I won't have time to merge something working for 5.0 I think.
The API of wiki-stream is pretty much ready and a standard XML based input/output module has been written (mostly for tests) but I won't have time to write database input and XAR output module that I wanted for a first version of a XAR export.

Definitely 2) (unless it also reverts my fixes for Oracle), see my answer to Denis' mail for details. But IMO that's not why we need to postpone RC1 and the final 5.0 :) BTW RC1 was planned for 8 April and later moved to 15th and we're the 17th so it's already postponed!! What we need is a new date anyway. We still have instabilities in 5.0 and func tests are still failing so I suggest to move RC1 to 19th and 5.0 final to 25 of April. Thanks -Vincent

Where did I said that we were late because of XWIKI-9041 ?
We still have instabilities in 5.0 and func tests are still failing so I suggest to move RC1 to 19th and 5.0 final to 25 of April.
I did not talked about releasing right now but tomorrow if 2) is chosen, there is 5 failing tests and pretty sure some of them are flickering tests we have since a while so I believe this is doable. What I did not seen before sending that mail is that Manuel could still reproduce XWIKI-9022, XWIKI-9014 and XWIKI-9016 today but if they are fixed on 4.5 branch it's probably not much.
