XWiki 1.1 feature list
Hi, With XWiki 1.0 released today, it's time to define the goals for XWiki 1.1 (first beta coming in a few weeks). I created a page on xwiki.org ( http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Idea/FeaturesFor11 ), please feel free to add/comment. Sergiu -- http://purl.org/net/sergiu
Thanks Sergiu for this. For the record I had already started a discussion about 1.1 content here on the list (thread was named "General goals for the 1.1 release"). I have tried putting on the FeaturesFor11 page what I had sent. I haven't put what Ludovic was suggesting too. My feeling is that we need to have simple and small goals for 1.1. I really prefer we deliver 1.1 in 3 months than in 1 year and to achieve this we need simple needs. Sorry Vincent, I forgot about that mail. Indeed, it would be better to have a release sooner than later. That's why we won't wait until all the issues are solved. The goals I considered more important are something we should keep in mind and try to fix as much as possible. We won't be able to comment all the code and cleanup all the files. I don't think we can completely get rid of "features" in the 1.1 release, or in this case it depends what "Make the default wiki better". For me features like: 1/ Better Rights and User/Group management 2/ Improved differences display 3/ Emails notifications & Watch Feature Are very important features.. They could be in the "make the default wiki better". I've added my proposed feature list to the wiki page. I think it's good to have a wiki page to synthesize the work plan and the priorities. I agree but there's a difference between making it our roadmap or having some new features sneaked in. For example the comment on save feature is already in 1.1B1.

I still believe more than strongly than we need to focus on what already exists as a *priority* (i.e. fix listed bugs, we have more than 100 known bugs, and improve what already exists by polishing them). New features could be added if someone wants to add them but I don't think they should be our intent/roadmap for 1.1. I very much view 1.1 as a consolidation of 1.0. Remember also that 1.1 timeframe is 3 months and we don't have that many developers so we need to stay realistic too. WDYT? Thanks -Vincent

I agree we need to stay realistic.. I still think we cannot decide not to include "Better rights and user/group management" This is a clear blocker of XWiki adoption.. "Improved differences display" is already in the works.. I've done an initial implementation and Laurent Lunatis is working on proposing a look and feel. I can work on this. "Email notification and Watch" needs a developer.. The way we should do it is listing, prioritizing and assigning work.. If we can't find people and time to work on it we drop from the bottom of the list. Ludovic
