Sorry - the problem appears to be more like the smtp engine is sending malformed requests to my mail server. Here is the error message: 

Error number 10005 in 10: Could not login to mail server 127.0.0.1 port 25 error code 501 (501 5.0.0 Invalid domain name )


There is a sendmail running on this machine and it does accept a connection from localhost.localdomain
