My upgrade from 0.984 to 1.0B1 was painless.
I used MySQL as database. I just made sure that my settings (hibernate.cfg) pointed to the MySQL database we are using.
I'm not familiar with PostgreSQL, but can't you find a tool that can backup your database and restore to a new schema? That is that I did for MySQL (using MySQL Administrator).

The migration is described in the Release Notes and I've just linked it from

Ha, that would be a problem. We need to track this as this is supposed to be
the way to upgrade. What errors are you getting?

Don't do it manually! We thought it would work seamlessly but it seems it
doesn't in your case so we need to find out what's not working. Let's work
together to resolve this.
