[xwiki-users] XWiki German translation status - help needed
Hello everybody, Recently I have taken a look at the status of the german language translations, and I have found several sections which should be improved. The main categories of interest, which are missing important translations are: Extension Manager, SOLR, Workspaces. Below there is a list with the missing translations in german. * XWiki CORE Resources aprox. 512 missing, the most important being the Extensions Manager - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/XWikiCoreResources?action=view... * Main SOLR Translations approx 4 missing - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/MainSolrTranslations?action=vi... * Workspace Application (Workspace Application - Workspace Translations) approx 32 missing- http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/WorkspaceApplication-TemplateT... * Workspace Application aprox 121 - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/WorkspaceApplication?action=vi... * Annotations aprox. 5 - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/AnnotationCodeTranslations?act... Since unfortunately I don't know german, I am bringing this to the community so maybe someone with german skills is willing to help. All you need to contribute is to know german and an account to l10n.xwiki.org. Regards, Sorin B.
Hi Sorin and everybody else,
Hello everybody,
Recently I have taken a look at the status of the german language translations, and I have found several sections which should be improved.
I have to admit that I neglected the extension manager l10n wise, as the extension descriptions usually are in English, too, and anyway I have some doubts about anyone who is messing around in the Admin area but is scared by English vocabular. However I see that the distribution manager is also affected which probably everyone who is just testing XWiki might at least seen one, and currently it has one lone "fortsetzen" (continue) button translated ... However today I added only a few unrelated things, as I could not find a search query to get all keys used by DW on one page ... without that I tend to miss stuff, and a half translated DW might be actually less helpful than a fully English one. I will retry over the weekend, unless someone else managed to update the translations before me. Btw there is some "Google analytics" stuff which is not translated. I heard rumors that this is deprecated ... can I ignore this?
* Main SOLR Translations approx 4 missing - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/MainSolrTranslations?action=vi...
Fixed; 4 are easy enough for me ;) I hope someone reviews whatever I typed in (actually just noticed I made a stupid typo in one of the translations). There are a few more translation open for review: http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/MainSolrTranslations?action=re...
* Workspace Application (Workspace Application - Workspace Translations) approx 32 missing- http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/WorkspaceApplication-TemplateT...
Here the trouble is that there is no consensus on the translation of the word "workspace" itself. A literal translation ("Arbeitsbereiche") might be misunderstood as "areas of competence". Maybe things end up reusing the English word in the German translation ...
* Workspace Application aprox 121 - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/WorkspaceApplication?action=vi...
I had to pass this on for this evening to whoever comes along next; however I noticed that there are at least four keys for "Yes" and the same number of "No"-translations; maybe it would help to keep the "missing translation count" low if creating translation keys for these common words only if there is really a need for it; I guess most of the time it is not, especially as these words often appear as button labels, which users probably want to be the same all over the place.
* Annotations aprox. 5 - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/AnnotationCodeTranslations?act...
Again, easy enough for me to add them; but if someone could have a second opinion, they (and some more) are open for review: http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/AnnotationCodeTranslations?act... Cheers, Clemens
Hi Sorin and everybody, I see a few folks beside me have been busy last week, so the missing translations have been sometwhat reduced:
* XWiki CORE Resources aprox. 512 missing, the most important being the Extensions Manager - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/XWikiCoreResources?action=view...
Down to 63 keys (and even less "real" missing) Here we have mainly the LDAP Admin open, and some already deprecated keys for the DW - which makes the missing translations look much more than they actually are ... I completely understand why it is useful to have deprecated translations around, but in case that: a) the translation key is deprecated b) the translation is empty I do not see the point of having the deprecated key around. I wonder if it is possible to exclude these empty / deprecated translations without making the synchronization of the contents of l10n with the property files in the git too complicated. Or maybe it is possible to exclude the deprecated keys from the "List of empty translations" on l10n? This would prevent people from wasting time by looking at already deprecated translation keys. A random note to the other folks who update translations: I also translated some parts of the "App within Minutes" and tried to avoid using the term "class" as much as possible, which has lead to several less-than-literal translations; I have also updated the "German translation rules" at http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/L10N/TranslationRules_de#HAppwithinMinu... As stated there, this is of course just a proposal and open to discussion; if you find the translations confusing, please add feedback there, and in case better terms are proposed we can update the translations.
* Main S Translations approx 4 missing - http://l10n.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Platform/MainSolrTranslations?action=vi...
Here I see quite some more keys sprung out if the ground - meanwhile it is more like 22 Translations missing; no reason to get idle :) I guess it is mostly the facets which now made it to l10n.xwiki.org Btw, when will be the next release which contains the updated translations from l10n? Especially for the "App with minutes" and the DW I would like to see how the new translations look "in action". Oh, and has anyone actually figured out how to set the language for the DW when installing a new XWiki from scratch? Obviously the settings in the XWiki itself cannot do that, as they are yet to be installed. I tried to set the locale for the servlet container via LANG="de_DE.utf8", but it seems this had no effect. Anyone knows what I am doing wrong? Cheers Clemens

Actually they are not suposed to be listed and they used to not be listed but the way to indicate deprecated keys changed a bit, I will look at it.
