I think explain it without a picture. say I have 2 lines as follows:
1 2 3 4 5 6
If I place my cursor after 3 and press delete until the two lines merge. Then 4 5 6 will show up with a light grey background.
I’ve tried it and pressed suppr when the cursor was after 3 and I got:
1 2 34 5 6
But no grey background.
What browser and what version are you using? I tried with Chrome 46.0.2490.71 at http://playground.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/TestDelete

Hi, The version of XWiki I'm using is 5.4.4, and using chrome (version 47.0.2526.106). As mentioned earlier, when I have two lines of text, e.g. 1 2 34 5 6 The text background turns to light grey for the character '4 5 '6 when I place the cursor after 3, and hit delete until the two lines merge 1 2 34 56 I tried the same thing in XWiki playground using chrome, the text background did not turn light grey. Is there a way to stop the wysiwyg editor from changing the text background in version 5.4.4? This is not a feature AFAIK and it looks like a bug. It seems it’s been fixed in more recent versions though so if you can I’d recommend that you try upgrading your XWiki version. Note that I don’t know much about the WYSIWYG’s internals so maybe someone else will have some better idea. Thanks -Vincent

Could be http://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-10276 , fixed in 6.1M2, but there is a workaround in the comments. Hope this helps, Marius
