Creole has done the work for us. I don't see why we should do it again especially since we want to be compatible with it...

Not that I don't like ~ in particular, but I don't like that we must use *anything* as a very special symbol, so we should be sure that it's the safest choice.
Sure. Two more reasons: * we were using ~~ previously for italics and we didn't get any complaint about the fact that ~ were hard to type * I'm pretty sure ~ is less common than \ -Vincent
