Since we're working actively on the Solr search, I think the best is that you test the latest snapshots.
IMO the most important for this release is Solr since it's supposed to work perfectly well for 5.1 final. Testing a real install and comparing results between the Lucene search and the Solr search and reporting anything that's working less well in Solr is crucial.
Note that I think perfect will be very hard for 5.1 with the remaining bugs and the fact that we are supposed to release the RC1 already.
