I have used commons vfs in the past on Cargo and it has worked great. I've just had a look at its releases and it's been a while since the last one. However activity seems to be picking up and provided we have our own interface I don't see a major issue. At worse we would only use RAM and file implementations.
Disclaimer: I'm not planning to work on this anytime soon. Just wanted to share the idea with you so that we can decide if that's something we want or not.
