Hi devs,
http://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-16119 wants to make the Notifications / Activity Stream look nicer.
I've made a proposal at https://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/Notifications11x/
Let me know what you think.
Looks good thanks!
Some comments:
* The Alert area has a UIXP and the Notifications are just one UIX for that UIXP. The Watchlist settings are another UIX and today the License Application also contributes a UIX. * I’m not sure yet how much we would need Sticky Events since today the missing License warnings are implemented as a UIX and not as Notification Events. I don’t think we really have a need right now. Feels nice but not sure about it in practice.
Ok, then we don't implement them as Sticky Notifications, but the UIX could take the styling from Notifications.
* Collapsible settings: I don’t see the arrow for the Notifications UIX. What is called Notifications is actually a “Watching” UIX.
Maybe we can add the expanding activator with JS. The idea if that I've tried to hide the Watchlist area. The watchlist has also a lot of automatic behavior that auto-watches the pages created by you, etc. The manual watches should be done by advanced users.
If you hide this UIX by default then you also prevent its discovery so I’m not sure it’s a good thing. I don’t think that the manual watch is something for advanced users at all. For me it’s useful whenever you want to watch a page that you’re interested in (you may not have created or contributed to it with a major revision). If OTOH you have collapsible UIX and the state is saved in user cookies then I don’t see a problem.
Also they take a lot of space and they are not really usual for Notifications areas. So that's why I've tried to hide them.
Sure that’s a good goal but we need to be careful to not make it non-discoverable too so that’s why I’m a bit worried. For me this is really the entry point of the watch feature ATM.
* “Social Events”: I’m not convinced that we should mix mentions with notifications. IMO that makes it hard to see the messages. I would use a different system for mentions and have a different UIX in the Alert menu for them.
We already integrate them in Notifications. I just restyled them in order to fit the new UI. The Message Stream has their own templates, and they follow a different pattern of event display.
Right, and I remember already commenting on this aspect in the past (the fact that messages are going to be drowned in pages notifications). There are UI solutions for this which is for ex to have tabs for types of notifications, or filters so that you can see all notifications of type ‘Message’ for ex. Ideally, the user should be able to click on something that lists all unread message notifications for ex. Or all unread Blog notifications. Or all unread Pages notifications. i.e. filter by “Application” + by unread. WDYT? Thanks -Vincent
