The homepage is relevant in the context of the "5 minutes" experience. We have to make it very clear on what "5 minutes" we are talking about. Also the separation between XE and XEM needs to be made because they are not the same thing.
XEM I struggled to install XEM (finding out what file to download, installing mysql, starting xem, changing the max allowed packet, importing, etc). Additionally, XE/XEM should be able to create the main wiki's database for itself (if it's not already created and empty). If you start on an empty mysql, even if you already gave permissions to the xwiki user, you still have to manually do 'create database xwiki'.

Then I didn't know how to create a new wiki (expected to see it in the Add menu). It's very clear that XEM process (installing and using) has lots of things to be improved and the most important thing is to make also a separation on the persona we are covering (the beginner user? the administrator? are normal users gonna create new wikis (workspaces)?) XEM homepage can be made for admins and provide statistics or it can be exactly as XE (end user will not know the difference) and have the wiki management in administration.
XE XE homepage was somehow pimped with the new dashboard system. The current content of the homepage is suitable, would need maybe some more discoverability to show the user he can actually customize the homepage any way he likes.
I really believe that we need some kind of "getting started" step (documentation or guided or a layered tips system activated on certain time + events). After having a bit of thought about the XE/XEM Home Page investigations, I don't think the "home page" investigation is relevant.
I'd like to propose to split this investigation into 2 investigations:
1/ "XWiki in the first 5 minutes" investigation
How to improve XWiki's User Experience in the first 5 minutes with simple or more complex changes in the home page but for all initial actions that are made by a user/administrator when he starts with XWiki. The objective of this investigation would be to list small changes that could be implemented in the coming releases and list larger work that would need their own investigation.
2/ XEM/Workspaces investigation
This investigation is about the next generation Multi-Wiki management including creation of Workspaces with the management of application. New features would be part of that as well as a redesign of the Wiki creation and management UI.
On this matter there is already work in the Wiki 3.0 project with a prototype delivered of this work, which is a great basis for discussion, in which we need to bring some guidelines about the objective of these features as well as User Experience proposals by Cati.
