Hi, In the news section we can add news about releases, past events XWiki attended, etc. In the blog panel we could also add other types of articles. These are not necessarily news pieces, but can bring value to readers that are interested in XWiki. For example: * A weekly/monthly digest summarizing what's been happening on xwiki.org * Posts that show the benefits of using XWiki products and applications (e.g. how using XWiki applications can increase your productivity) I'd be happy to write some blog posts, provided people find them useful. Why exactly? Because of the connotation that if you "try it" it's because there's a paying version?

yes. Usually "try" means it's the free version and there's a paying one. It could be confusing.

I'd say that encouraging visitors to go ahead and play with XWiki actually is a good thing :-)

I think that in the format the Silvia proposed in her other email, a newsletter would be good. Personally I don't like that monitoring an open source project usually involves two far-apart levels of granularity:

- monitoring the mailing list(s) - coming from time to time to check if something happened

Given that we don't have an [email protected] list, a monthly newsletter is a great way of keeping users in touch, without making them monitor the mailing list.

One thing we do better than most other projects is that we have a blog, but IMO it is still not enough.

It's not about whether it would be nice to have or not. It's about the effort it takes to do it. Honestly we'll never be able to sustain it and it has to come from the community. We need something that is low maintenance and a newsletter is VERY high maintenance. I'd + 1 for an announcement mailing list. It's a good idea and we lack it.

Yes I agree. It's a question of priorities for the home page. As you know the home page is not large and there's always a fight to what gets put there. IMO an Events page where everyone could add events related to XWiki is very good to have and I'm +1 about it. Now if I have to choose on the home between "Events" and "new macros/snippets/extensions", I think I'd prefer the later. Right now "Events" is there but promoting the contributors is not there at all. That's also part of the "corporate" thing I can feel. Our current home page is slightly too "corporate" too BTW which is one thing I'd like to fix about it. I'd like a community home page where people want to contribute. Thanks -Vincent

I really really don't like this (I'm -1 for now on a twitter account like defined above). First it's hard to share the credentials with all committers, second we should not increase the number of channels we use since we'll just neglect them. We need to use more our existing channels: blogs, mailing lists. I'd much prefer an announcement mailing list and then if someone wants to do it, you could automate a twitter account to take info from that mailing list and publish it on twitter. It's better. Some more feedback: * The "Community" tab's name is strange since this the whole wiki is about the community. We need a name that says clearly it's for the "Developer of XWiki". * Subscribe to the mailing list should be next to the Support section above. I think we need a single support section and the options about what kind of support to get would be mentioned on that support page. * I think the home page is now too crowded with too much information. The mockup is probably misleading in term of vertical space it takes. * Do we need the "Features" list and the "What can I use it for" on the home page? Couldn't we have a visible "Features" button just after the introductory text instead? The idea would be to have introductory text + XE + stats below. This would allow to move the latest additions in the main page. * I think like some others that News and Blogs should be merged. We simply should use the xwiki.org Blog more. Since the majority feel we don't need separate News/Blog sections I merged the news with the blog in one panel on the right (there is still a link to events).

It looks better like this. I'd even be in favor of removing the "latest releases" panel since they will appear in the blog. I think we should make the blog the one place to get news about the project, make the RSS feed very visible + have a xwiki.org twitter account that automatically tweets on new blog posts. Publication of new snippets / applications / etc could also be automatically tweeted and/or posted on the blog, thus removing the need for a dedicated widget on the homepage.

Yes in Community WebHome then. Developers are part of the the Community but you can have Community members not part of the development team. Said differently:

For me Community = any way to contribute to xwiki (including being a committer) Developers = practices for committers

I'm still unsure if we should split Developers from Community but we'll see later on.

* Documentation should have submenus to see what product it is documenting. I don't see that in your screenshot. Also, we need to decide how we do platform documentation vs project documentation. Thus I'd like to see Documentation home page. * Same thing for Projects. I'd like to see the Project home page. I don't understand the difference between Project and Document. For me, Projects tab gives a list of all projects, explain what they do. When you go on a project home page you get to see more details, stats, etc and a Documentation link that goes to the same place as the Documentation horizontal nav. * I don't like the "About XWiki" page. It's actually content for the Community area. But we could rewrite it differently. * "Get Involved" is that same as Community for me. We should remove one of them. * As stated in the bullet point above there's a pb with the Documentation submenu in the footer since each product has its own documentation. How do we want to handle that?

I have seen this page but it's a bit of a mess, there are lots of stuff everywhere.

My initial suggestion was for both proposals to get implemented and then we could pick which one we thought fits better. If everyone decides the new proposal is better before implementing the previous one it's alright with me, since I am not an UI expert and all that matters is we have the best solution for the website in a timely manner.

Yes in Community WebHome then. Developers are part of the the Community but you can have Community members not part of the development team. Said differently:

For me Community = any way to contribute to xwiki (including being a committer) Developers = practices for committers

I'm still unsure if we should split Developers from Community but we'll see later on.

* Documentation should have submenus to see what product it is documenting. I don't see that in your screenshot. Also, we need to decide how we do platform documentation vs project documentation. Thus I'd like to see Documentation home page. * Same thing for Projects. I'd like to see the Project home page. I don't understand the difference between Project and Document. For me, Projects tab gives a list of all projects, explain what they do. When you go on a project home page you get to see more details, stats, etc and a Documentation link that goes to the same place as the Documentation horizontal nav. * I don't like the "About XWiki" page. It's actually content for the Community area. But we could rewrite it differently. * "Get Involved" is that same as Community for me. We should remove one of them. * As stated in the bullet point above there's a pb with the Documentation submenu in the footer since each product has its own documentation. How do we want to handle that?

We had already commented on the previous proposals and now this is a new proposals which is quite different. Does it mean we need to restart the discussions? * My biggest complaint: The home page doesn't look like a community site at all. This is important. Showing avatars + names would a way to achieve this. The current home page could be used as the main home page for the XE project page instead.
