[xwiki-devs] A better UI for annotation module
Hi all, Annotation module success depends strongly of being able to provide a great user exprerience. So I think current annotation module UI should be improved, for now it has only been tested in firefox. Since I really do not have skills concerning interface ergonomy, I would propose that a designer handle it. annotation feature installation and usage instructions can be found here http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/AnnotationModule WDYT ? That would be good. One of our projects requires the annotation feature so we might be able to have one of our developers work on it. We'll talk about that while working on the upcoming XWiki Enterprise 2.0 roadmap.
annotation feature installation and usage instructions can be found here http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/AnnotationModule
I'll try giving it a go ASAP. Guillaume

One important thing I think is that you need to put an annotation feature demo on a public server somewhere, so that we can all see what's the current status Ludovic Lucien Pereira a écrit :

Hi Lucien, Great feature and work. These are just some ideas for your design and a mockup with some suggestions: - The annotated text in panel is much too powerful if it's bold; - The "..." should be after the annotated text, on the same line, not before "by"; - for the "Delete" action, you should use "silk/cross" ( http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Standards/Icons is not ready yet - but that's gonna be our delete action); - the "Delete" action should always have the same position for the elements, no matter the size of the author's name; - I would like to see in the panel's title the number of all existing annotations; - I would like to have a "legend" of all the authors that worked on the text and how many annotations he did. Mockup: http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Improvements/WebHome/Annotat... Question: - What happens if you have more that 5 annotations? - How many annotation will you display in the panel? Thanks, Caty

This is technically possible, but not implemented yet.

Nice tool lucien !! Nice mockup caty. ;-)
- I would like to see in the panel's title the number of all existing annotations;
Did you make it to show evryting even if some are hidden in the panel?
Question: - What happens if you have more that 5 annotations? - How many annotation will you display in the panel?
Yes I have the same wonder. I would add : What happen if there is long texts ?

Not well handled yet, for now all lines are displayed in the panel. I think a popup panel should be good to display long texts.

Another sugestions : deploying in place : Lorem ipsium dolor es... [more] Click one more Transform in : Lorem ipsum dolor est magnificat this texte is about five lines long. This is political design decision, lol. If you use this on in spite of popups very long texts (starting at 5-8 lines) become hard to read. Then if people see them very long text is impossible to read, they will use comment to devlop long theorics in spite of the panel. This depends if you want your pannel for fast notifications or if you want your panel for all that can be done in commenting text.

Hi Caty, Thanks for these suggestions, each of them is relevant.
Question: - What happens if you have more that 5 annotations?
In which aspect ?
- How many annotation will you display in the panel?
The panel display all annotations in the page. We should find a way to save space : - by programming a scrollable panel. - by displaying a small subset of annotations each time.

Made a small user action chart for test purpose. It is not complete yet it may be a good start to help. http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/XWiki/ThibautDeveraux/b1lme15Annotat... PS : evaluation of UX relative importance of facts. About accidental comment deletion, it would be a rare case mainly linked with the fact I didn't not find how to write. Long text comments may also be a rare case. Being able to see evrything on the pannel (more than 5 comments, to many ~long texts) is a more probable case among the rares ones imo. Being able to see all the comments in the pannel (scroll, change pannel size in auto or cliking on more, etc. ) may be interesting. Finding out how to "Write a new comment" may be a big problem for user adoption. If it is not me who missed someting. ^_^ Changing the colors the colors, icones, text architecture... of the panel according to Caty mockup could help for a better UX, both for emotional (++percieved quality) and ergonomics (++easy to figure out things). 2009/9/9 Thibaut DEVERAUX <[email protected]>:

Since annotations are stored as objects of the document, you can rollback any annotation deletion using hystory tab.

I let the delete button easily accessible in order to underline the fact that annotations are easily managable objects. For design reasons I'm not opposed to made this action harder to do.

Hi Thibaut,
First of all, please read this document : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/AnnotationModule
Thanks. It is helpfull. Since I was testing the annotation module it is a chance I havn't read this earlier. Having seen the video was already a biais to tests. Users rarely read the manual before using. Also, since it is possible to make intuitive interfaces or in place explaination there is no reason to oblige the user to read the manual since it slow it's main activity. A simple "select text and use ctrl to add an anotation" on a (?) icone can be good. Also having a (+) icone that open the comment box if text selected or print a "select text now" can be another deal. First may be faster once learned, second may be more fluid the first times as the learning is made during usage. There may be other solutions up to your imagination.
I tryed to underline a texte, then I've been looking for a button or someting to add an anotation. I didn't manage to find one. So I get in the texte editor, here neither I didn't find the way to add an anotation. Then I watched the Video on Vimeo. Yet on the video I did'nt manage to get it was done. Keyboard shortcut ?
Indeed, you have to keep control key down while selecting.
When I want to create an anotation. Where can I find how to make it ?
Thanks

An annotation enabled test server will be available soon. A test server is available here : http://annotations.devxwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/
