But I have found one in the xwiki-1.0-beta-2.jar archive ?
Yes. As I said it was in the xwiki JAR...
Do I need that archive for a basic use ?
Yes. You need everything in the WAR!
Moreover, there is no directive in this file which tells me where the xwiki.log is written ...

Hi vincent (and the others !), according to the doc ( http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/InstallationTomcat ), only the xwiki-1.0-beta-2.war file is needed with the Tomcat container, isn't it ? If not, in which folder do i need to extract xwiki-1.0-beta-2.jar ? [TOMCAT_HOME]/webapps/xwiki/ ? [TOMCAT_HOME]/webapps/xwiki/WEB-INF/ ? Moreover, I stop/start tomcat with the default /etc/init.d/tomcat55 script. Even calling it from [TOMCAT_LOG_FOLDER] doens't solve the problem, I always got this " java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission xwiki.log write)" in my [TOMCAT_LOG_FOLDER]/catalina_$DATE ...
