My previous wiki used markdown syntax, I converted the markdown syntax to XHTML via pandoc. The output validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional, but when I try to convert it to xwiki syntax the conversion fails.

What do you mean by failing and what result to you get exactly ?
2. Are there better ways to import wiki content?
