To answer your question, you should simply set the rights you want (you want XWikiGuest to be given the view permission). I modified the skin not to show the login/register buttons but then the user seems to have all rights and is allowed to edit as well ...

It's simple; XWiki Preferences has an option called "Always authenticate on edit"; set it to "yes".
