Writing to the Database

While editing a ClassSheet, XWiki shortcuts writing to the database with its hot-coded input fields. How can one explicitly write to the database in this context? Rather than allowing the user to type one of the property's values into an input box, I need the value to be extracted from the URL and directly written to the database as the property value for this instance of my custom class. Inserting: $doc.displayEdit($prop, "{property name}", ${the getParameter's new variable}) did not work.
