It turned out that if you have global user via LDAP ldap, support in sub-wikis has to be set off. This can be achieved by opening this link and editing the ldap object: https://DOMAIN/xwiki/wiki/SUBWIKI/edit/XWiki/XWikiPreferences?editor=object Set "ldap" to "no". This is a bit obscure from our point of view. Maybe someone has a reason? Now the expected behaviour is there. Global user can log in to each sub-wiki as a global user.
