Maybe the tree-idea is the wrong way to create a second manual navigation? Like to hear your ideas and thoughts to that.

There is also http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Menu+Application#HVerti... but it doesn't support opening the menu to the current page as you wish.
