Hi Mark,
Indeed you're right, this is described at http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/AccessWiki
Now the reason this is now a problem is because we've made a change in XWiki 5.0 by making the virtual mode (ie multiwiki mode) on by default and this is causing more trouble than necessary when you have only 1 wiki.
I've this sent a proposal to improve this for 5.0.2/5.1M1: http://xwiki.markmail.org/thread/exogtlfepsvzx4iq
WOWŠ that explains a lot of the trouble I had during my install. This was my first xwiki install as well. I had the strangest issues. I thought I was crazy and nearly gave up. Normally that wouldn't be an issue because of the failONWikiDoesNotExist shows the default wiki when It can't find the wiki you really requested, as opposed to the wiki you think you requested with the default (now defunct) URLs. I found that it behaves as expected if both A and B are true. A) your server is accessed with the dns www B) your application context is xwiki Anything else required me to install the wiki manager (not included in the enterprise deployment) and setup a single wiki with an alias.
