Hi Fabio,
This means I am iterating and I gather feedback and depending on that feedback we must agree on a version.
Ok. I thought that "old" meant "superseded by" :)
On a wiki platform, what do you think is more relevant: the user or page centric approach? What are the things that make this version (the page centric one) not to fit the Wiki 3.0 specification?
What is missing basically boils down to the "Share your thoughts" box
Yes, user updates should be mixed in the stream ultimately, I think.
and the type of information we can convey with it.
The "user centric" view, imho, is also useful because a "user" could also be an application that sends events (e.g., meeting or deadlines reminders, etc.) that can be shown in a more natural way in a user centric view. Basically even applications might share their thoughts through the activity stream ;)
I completely agree with the last sentence. BUT I think it's not incompatible with a document/user mixed-approched (I don't think either full document-centric or full user-centric can embrace the versatility of XWiki) I see two types of entries : * Document updates. Basically what is currently in latest proposal (though I would add little user pictures here as well, even before the click). This is KM, collaboration, etc. * Users/applications updates. Those are less structured, more a-la facebook. I see something like http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActivityStreamMixed (raw picture, would have to be refined) (Note I also have right-padded a bit more the comment/annotation/pencil/etc icons that are on top of user photos, I think they were a bit too masked by them) Jerome.
Jerome missed the avatars, so if you did too, please try to expand the items in the prototype (when you hover the items an arrow appears in the right part suggesting that the item can be expanded ).
Yes I missed them too, but then I saw it. Still the previously mentioned types of information are not available
anymore.

I would have called that version "user centric" as well since documents updates might be seen as posts done by the "XWiki system" user :) Anyway, I think that the mixed approach is fine. -Fabio

Actually - if I think about it :P we can have all this entries displayed as a menu with 4 entries (Entries, Objects, Actions, Authors), each with its own submenu that displays with a check the active filter. This would be in order to save some space. I need some help on what filters we want to keep and the category naming for them.

Why is Marta's avatar repeated for the same action (attach files) in collapsed view? Are they going to be linked to two different things? It is also a bit confusing because they don't match the number of attached files. You have to expand to understand that the first avatar is linked to two files attached.

Same, your avatar appears twice for the same action (edit activity stream prototype). IMO it's enough to show the avatar once for the same action (e.g. edit) in collapsed view and to display it multiple times in expanded view. Besides that, I like your proposal. Great job! Thanks, Marius

In my opinion they should stay like this. If between Marta's actions, Raluca commented something (that Marta forgot to add an attachment) I would want to see the exact/real flow of actions, not a compressed one.

Same for the avatar. Idea: we could also have a special icon for minor edits and keep the current separation for minor/major edits. In the other example, there are two separate edits: the expand is broken, but one is an commented edit and the other a simple one. IMO, if I want to review what has been done on that page that day, I would want to be able to review the comments for each edit.
Besides that, I like your proposal. Great job!

Looking again at this prototype I was wondering if the UI for changing the user's status should also be displayed somewhere in that page. This is, in fact, something that was present in previous versions of the prototype and that disappeared at some point. -Fabio

Changing user status should be made though a "gadget" above "Recent Activity" area, independent of it. Actually IMO it could not appear at all near "Recent Activity", but be included only inside User Profile. But we could have it in both areas too. Thanks, Caty

Yes, I didn't mean that it needed to be in the "Recent Activity" area because, as you said, it doesn't make sense. I was just wondering if it makes sense to put it in that page. Anyway, IMHO, a box/gadget to enter the user status should be included in the implementation. -Fabio
Hi Caty, Perhaps I miss something, even I tried to follow carefully the tread, but I don`t understand why the avatars are shown for each modification when the page items are collapsed, since is hard to associate the avatar with the specific modification that it refers to. Notice that if we have 20 modifications by 15 contributors on a document the screen will be filled with avatars like here: http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Ciprian/WebHome/ActivityStre... Even so, I like it;) Ciprian. On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 6:38 PM, Ecaterina Valica <[email protected]> wrote:

well IMO is not that hard to associate the specific modification because you can see the action icon
Notice that if we have 20 modifications by 15 contributors on a document the
for example, on Expense Report will be 15 changes by 3 contributors. Like Marius suggested we could compress modifications like: show the avatar + icon and near the icon have a number displayed, if for example the Administrator did 13 comments, but IMO every change matters if adds a major (minors will be filtered) version to the page and should be displayed separately. The changes that are displayed are related to the current day, so if was so much activity, that will be interesting to be shown. If you think this is too much, we can display just the first 5/10 changes and leave the rest for the expanded view (Have a "..." marker and have the text "15 changes by 3 contributors" shown the total changes made on that page). Thanks for feedback, Caty
