[xwiki-users] [Proposal] Comparing XWiki to MediaWiki and Confluence on xwiki.org

Hi, Since we had users asking on the IRC what are the differences between XWiki and other solutions, it would be a good idea to provide such pages on the website: - XWiki and MediaWiki http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/XWiki-vs-MediaWiki - XWiki and Confluence http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/XWiki-vs-Confluence It would be great to know if you agree with the listed content and if you find other similarities or distinctions between the above solutions. [xwiki-users] Bounced Emails

My subscription keeps getting disabled due to excessive bounces. I would understand that if I was still hosting my web host's email server, but I'm not having email send to my Gmail account. Any ideas what would be causing that? -- Keith Davis 214-906-5183

[xwiki-users] strip accents from page name used in url

Hi, I’m using XWiki in Slovak language which uses accents, which consequently causes problems with urls. The urls becomes ugly containing encoded characters with accents. Does XWiki have integration point out of the box to replace the page name with custom one, with stripped accents from it? Thank you Mirec

[xwiki-users] Importing a file system based set of folders with text, doc, files

I know xwiki can import various kinds of data one at a time per http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/Imports. Here is my more complex scenario. We have been adding text files, or doc files, to a windows file system set of folders. The normal pattern has been something like this: *-dir root* --*dir acronis backup* ---*dir 20150101 install on server01* ----text file somename.txt ---*dir 20150520 update to version x.x* ----text file re.txt ----image screenshot01.png --*dir backblaze* ---*dir 20140105 install and configure* ----txt file re.txt etc So, there are topic areas at the highest level (acronis, backblaze) and normally under them folders named for the date (20150101) with a title (install on server01). Inside the folder is a mix of text files, word documents, and images. I would use the top level folder as a category or topic area inside xwiki. I would use the date as a data point on the wiki entry, to make sure I can sort by date of occurrance. The text or word files are often named re.txt. Sometimes they have a more distinctive name, but mostly the file name is not a viable name for a wiki entry. The second part of the folder name would be better for that. So, no one needs to parse all the details of our existing folder/file hive. I realize there is no way that any wiki system can simply import and translate that into something that would be presentable inside the wiki. I expect to write some code (non-php, I'd probably use vb) that traverses the hive that we have, and writes elements of what it finds into an xml file or something else that can otherwise be pulled into xwiki. the text and doc files would be converted into pages and the images...I'm not familiar enough with xwiki to know if it'd be best to leave those files in place on the disk and simply references them in the related wiki entry, or better to move them into the wiki system somehow. I could even write the wiki entries directly into the database. xwiki has an api, possibly that would be useful for this purpose? Probably an issue that has been encountered many times in the past. [xwiki-users] What does "Version 8.4.3 is installed as dependency" mean?

I wanted to import a word document to see how it does. I have xwiki 8.4.3. The Office Importer Application needs to be installed, as far as I can tell. Next to it's name it says 8.3, and in the header it has "Version 8.4.3 is installed as dependency". It does not have the blue Install button; instead it says "Downgrade". Dependencies listed are xwiki platform - office - importer 8.3 and then "version 8.4.3 is provided" xwiki commons - component - api and then "version 8.4.3 is provided" I have not found anything in the docs that explain what this means, although I expect the info is there somewhere. Does it mean that I have to downgrade my installation to 8.3 in order to get this extension to install? But another extension "File Manager Application" does have the blue install button; and it has many dependencies on apparently older extensions like velocity macro 5.4.4. I can't make sense of it. [xwiki-users] Is there an easy way to copy paste multiple images onto a page?

One question I have about the very useful feature of xwiki is how to drag and drop multiple images onto a page. Offhand xmarks seems to create an image attachment called image.png; pasting another image onto the same page overwrites the first image, using with the same name. Any way to have xwiki increment the image names? [xwiki-users] Categorization of pages; tags?

I've been searching for docs and postings re categorization of xwiki pages. I didn't see anything built in so far but I may have missed it. I see there is a tags extension http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Tag+Application I'd expect categorization to be a major interest for xwiki users. Is this tag extension the main resource? Did I miss something built in? The page Content Organization <http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/ContentOrganization/> has nested pages and subwikis as the primary artifacts of organization. I will be creating a event tracker and it's going to be important to provide metadata for the posts. I'm very new to xwiki, but as I wrote this I realized that there are other built in features of xwiki which will help solve my needs. For example, if I can define a form or template (not sure about the terms) which contains a field Event Date, I hope that can become a hard data point which can be queried etc. Pretty sure this is so; and that solves some of the issues without a "category" or "tag" feature. [xwiki-users] Editing an Application result in errors even when making no changes

Hi everyone, I recently tried to install a few applications onto my XWiki 8.4.2 instance, some of them (namely, Idea Application & Task Application) get this strange error whenever I tried to click Edit and just click Next to explorer the feature: the main screen will display some kind of exception about velocity macro and Space (I am sure you can reproduce this to see the details). Also, in the Application left navigation, application name will change to some kind of id/reference (e.g. ideas.app.title, TaskManager.panels.name). So, I have a few questions: 1. It doesn't seem natural to me that a user with role of normal user can Edit an Application. So what does it mean by "Editing an Application"? And why would it be normal to allow a user (non-admin) to edit an Application? 2. I am guessing Editing an application is some kind of administrative activities. If so, is there any documentation regarding Applications administration in XWiki? I found this: http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/Applications? but it covers only Installing and (a bit of) Usage. It references other documentation for Development of Application or XWiki itself but not administration. Thanks, Zoom
