I can't find any log4j.properties file in the archive xwiki-1.0-
beta-2.war.
But I have found one in the xwiki-1.0-beta-2.jar archive ?
Yes. As I said it was in the xwiki JAR...
Do I need that archive for a basic use ?
Yes. You need everything in the WAR!
Moreover, there is no directive in this file which tells me where
the xwiki.log is written ...

xwiki-1.0-beta-2.jar ?
[TOMCAT_HOME]/webapps/xwiki/ ? [TOMCAT_HOME]/webapps/xwiki/WEB-INF/ ?
Why would you need to extract any file???
Moreover, I stop/start tomcat with the default
/etc/init.d/tomcat55
script.
Even calling it from [TOMCAT_LOG_FOLDER] doens't solve the problem,
I always got this " java.security.AccessControlException: access
denied (java.io.FilePermission xwiki.log write)" in my
[TOMCAT_LOG_FOLDER]/catalina_$DATE ...
Maybe I miss something :)
You're starting xwiki under a given user. Try creating a file in the
directory where you're starting xwiki with that user. My guess is
that you won't have the rights.
