FYI, it's working now. I stopped tomcat, set the file descriptor limit
higher for the tomcat user, deleted the contents of the /home/<tomcat
user>/data/lucene directory, and restarted tomcat. After about 30 minutes
the index was fully rebuilt.

hmm. I deleted a different directory before. Anyway... yes, the user has
access to this directory.

When the page "stucks", it's often because of a write issue on xwiki
work
directory. Are you sure you put a static value of xwiki.work.dir in
xwiki.cfg file after your upgrade? Your application server must have the
right to write in there.
