The tray doesn't break the user edition flow (whereas the dialog box does). Therefore I think it is a better design and usability choice. This way the user does not need to go through a dialog box each time he wants to edit a setting : he can do so in less time, without being interrupted. In both cases, I agree we need to find a way to help the user make the right choice between available parameters. I'll look into this.
